grips by the cold . T om could barely I! manage a smile in the Pare Ferrne. The su rvivors were frozen and fa tigued . Dick Burleson wasn't even _ sure of how late he was when he reached the Pa re Ferme. It turned out .. that he had lost 10 m inutes because th e anti-fogging solu tion he used on his glasses had worn off in one section . Dick was now two m inutes and three seconds off Gold . Jack Penton, Rod Bush, Ga ry You nk ins, a quite and determined Mike Rosso and Carl Cranke finished ,t he day onSilver . For Crank" that was no easy matter. He had badly bruised and wrenched his left foot/ ankle early in loop on e and was lim pi ng badly whenthe day was over. Kevin La Voie, Bob Popiel, Billy Uhl and Ted Leimbach finished the day on Bronze. I Billy Uhl typified the anything-tofinish spirit that prevailed on Day Five. Uhl's chain stretched more than his rea r wheel adjustment would take • up so Uhl pulled the wheel (on the side of a steep hill with riders continually ~ going by) and t9C?!l ",--'.in! out of the chain. Not only that, but Uhl rode the , day without benefit of a front brake which he lost early in the first loop. Those who had time, changed tires . chains and d id routine maintenance before im po undi ng their bikes . Ted Leimbach went t he whole route. ''I'm in it to finish . This is insu ra nce. " J ack Penton was a bit m ore to the point. " I'm gonna make it to t he finis h I' line one more time. I threw m y chain at least 10 times today and that's top priority to fix tomorrow mo rn ing." Check the oil, wipe the windows, dollar gas . The Stars and Stripes flew at this gas stop alerting the riders that this was THE place. (Left to right! Ted Leimbach (center) finds himself flanked by some tough competition in the form of Alessandro Gritti and Claudo Thomas. Day Six Finishing was t he onl y t hing on th e minds of the 12 ri ders who started Day Six For some it was a tall order whic h req uired n ursi ng the bike, the body and the mi nd for one more day of 68 ,m iles on the " B" schedule . Even with the change in sche dule . 'the trails were still de m and ing an d even a small m istak e could wipe ou t five days of perserverance . T om Pent on , T ed Leimbach. Ga ry rr You nkins and Dick Burleson . zeroed th e course . J ack Penton d ropped a n m inu te wh ile Mark Deyo d ropped three. Kevin LaV oie lost 10 m inutes som ewhere. ')r Carl Cranke crashed hard inju ring ? the ligaments -in his left sho ulde r and losing nine m inutes. Added to th e foot / ankle inj ury of th e d ay befo re, Cranke was not in l':ood shape p hysically. Rod Bush skipped through with on ly three m inutes lost. Billy Uhl and Bob Popiel each spent an ag onizing m inute on the starting line kicking their machines which both failed to come to life in the required time . Uhl lost 21 minutes on the route while Pop iel dropped 17. Mike Rosso continued on the same no nonsense pace that had kep t him rolling on Day Five. but d ropped 20 minutes with sm all problems. , T he final motocross test was for · most only a formality in the sense th at the y could neither lose their medals nor upgrade t hem . But for Dick Bu rleson it was d ifferent. Unoffic ial ca lculations' ahd Burleson needing to finish within ap -. proximately 50 seconds of t he class leader to vau lt to a Gold m edal. Burleson's margin was 48 .54 secondst His_margin for error when computed from the final results left Burleson only 27 seconds within the bounds of Gold medal status. Burleson shrugged it off while Cycle East team manager Buzz McQueen mentioned somet hing about shot nerves and it being too damn dose for comfort. " Anyone who won a med al here," said American ' team manager AI Eames at the its -all-over -party on the night of Day Six, "d eserved it. There · ~as. n.o~~i!?g ~.~y. a;b?u t.
