SEP T . 18 Despite a two kick start, Phil Stumbo (400 KTM ) managed to take the lead less than halfway around the first loop to finish first at CRG's hare scrambles at Lucern~. Mark Zoller (400 Yam) jumped into the lead spot with Dave Wood (400 Yam). Chris .Kallen (400 Yam). Steve Heinze (400 Yam). Stumbo . and ~enny . Padilla (4~0 ' YZ) following Immediately be hin d , Padilla was holding off "Bad" Brad Henson (175 ). After jumping out of the narrow rollers. Zoller set sai l down a sa nd wash which led to a road that went cross grain with the desert . . It was here where Zoller's machine decided to quit . which handed the lead to Wood . . Stumbo moved up past Kallen on the cross grain road and began to put the pressure on Wood . Just behind the three leaders. Padilla and Henson were still going at it. Stumbo got by Wood with little trouble and began putting. space between himself and th e rest of th e field . . Down a white sand road towa rds the next challenging ' part of th e race . Kallen struck a rock and got off ha rd . He was unhurt bUI his bike could go no further . ending his first race of th e .' season. · · . · · · · ,; Henson and Pa dilla moved into second and third respectivel y with Monte Lee (250 Yam). Bill Tarl ing (250 KTM) and T om Kelly (250 KT M). a short distance behind . In a rough roller section. Monte Lee got int o a ju mp too East and unloaded . T arling a nd Kelly slip ped past. After proceeding d own the nex t sa nd wash , Ta rling seized and Kelly moved int o fourt h. Tarling cont in ued after waiting a minute or so for his engi ne to cool. The white Clean Sweep jersey of Stumbo became vis ibl e as he approached the pits and cleared the last hill. Henson was about a minute behind Stumbo .when he pulled into the pits . Padilla was in next . continuing on with a malfunctioning transmission . Kelly came . through fourth with Wood following closely . Both recovering from earlier d ifficulties. Tarling a nd Lee were through next with Steve Heinze riding a comfortable eighth. .: ' Stumbo and Henson never caught sight of one another and both were unchallenged for the remainder- of th e race. Further back. Kelly got past Padilla and his wounded scooter as did Tarling. In an effort to move up on . .Kelly and Tarling. Monte Lee was able to get past Wood. The minis were required to only go one loop so at the end of 30 miles it was Kell y Kline (80 Yam) with th e vict ory followed by Keith Loft in (80 Yam). Byron Van (80 Yam) and Brad T erpak.Jr. (80 Yam). Stumbo popped over th e hill and . wheelied across th e fini sh line for his first overall win . Henson was in for . Despite a two-kick start. Monte ~ee was una ble to catch Kelly or Tarlmg and had to settle for third 250 . sixth ov~rall. W ood was in just ahead of Heinze. who rode his first . race as an expert today . Next was Richa rd Zajic (250 Suz) who' swept the amateurs on his first ride as one. Novice Philip Petri domina ted his class on his 400 Yamaha . Steve Bowden (125 Yam) took the overall beginner win with ex-mini hot shoe Donnie Morrison ( 175 Yam) finishing right behind him .
