At the flag Turner and Burgett were fender to fender and only two lengths back Joyce and Gregson ended their fight j ust as close. joyce's 3-1 record took the win. Mark Gregson led the first 250 moto but Burgett kept poking at him until he got by. Da vid Taylor was running a close third unt il he went down . winding up fifth . Jeff Jennings took over the third place finish . It 'wa s Burgett out front with Gregson chasing as they pulled awa y in the second moto , Ron Turner followed in third all th e wa y. Jeff Jennings moved by Taylor halfway through to fin ish fourt h. Burgett owned the Open class ou tri ght fro m th e out set. Phil Oveland motored around in seco nd a ll night with a 1971 CZ (1969 Frame). Barney Newman worked up from a 10th place scratch to finish third in the first ro und . With a better scra tch in the second round he was in a position to challenge Oveland . He got too greedy and went over a berm , yielding to both Clay Azar and Rick Benek, who held him off to the flag . Burgett was out front far enough to give the crowd a one man show of wheelies , cross -ups , etc. . • Results in Results Section. mon ey winner , taking nea rly 20% of t he $10 ,00.0 purse , while a lot of other riders earned a lit tle cash along the way. T here was a lot of go od racing, new friends were made , and a' few ideas fo r m aking next yea r's event even - bet ter were stumbled upon . . The most serious accident of the week occurred when our bewhiskered announcer, Rob Tice, was headed for Delta Pa rk's even t. He pushed his luck and - bike too far , losing both and crashing. A shattered collar bone and messed up finger kept him at homefor the last two races. Bob (Action Oz) . Osb orne filled in a ll the quiet spots almost like a real a nno u nc er. T he 125 Pros were led into the firs-t , tu rn by Ron Dimeo, Mark Gregson, Mark Su n and Rick Burgett. Soon Gregson was in fro nt and pulling away . T hat's when he go t in trouble. There is one section of t he track where four humps make it look like the riders are on pogo sti cks . Gregson decided to try to take th e second and third jumps' in one leap. It didn't quite work. By the time he reached the final jump he and his b ike both bounced and rolled over and over, while three-fourths of the pack went by. He bravely returned to the fray but soon retired with blown shocks. That pogo section doomed Bill Joyce , also . During practice an alternate line around the whoops was used by many of the riders. Nothing was spelled out in the riders meeting and he thought it was a legal line until he was docked a lap for "cou rse cutting." The detour dropped him from third to .fifteent h . Burgett went
