He must ha ve gotten along well with his new Suzuki . as he went to th ree firsts . making it' look easy. Mark Detter (Suz) went 3·2-5 fo r second over a ll ahead of Vin cent Gonzal es (Suz) and Roy "Co wbo y" Burton (Suz).. To wind it up. the 250 Beginners were taken by Iva n Zuniga (Suz). but not wit hou t som e stiff co m petition fro m 53 yea r-old Joe Pena a nd his CZ . Pena too k t he first moto but follo wed up with a thi rd a nd a second which put hi m be hind Zun iga 's two firsts a nd one second . SEPT. 11 Goat Breker, no w mounted on a potent new 250 Husky, took clear command of DeAnza's pro class Sunday. At the sta n of moto one, 24 however. he was in the back seat behind Danny Jean (Suz). La st week's winner, Drew Nelson , was way back in seventh place as they came around for the first lap. It wasn't long until Nelson put his Suzuki in fourth behind Jean . Breker and Bill Pelto (Yam ). As the race went on , Breker applied more and more pressure to Jean, who "Was beginning to tire. This continued until lap se ve n. when Breker made his move and captured the lead. Riding with the smoothness that marks him as one of th e top riders in this area . Breker soon established a hea lthy lead , The distance between firs t a nd second place remained great until the white fla g lap . when Breker got a little too radical and dropped it. Jean realized his opportunity and got on the gas. bu t Breker was too fa st. The H usky rider managed to get u p and re mount be fore J e a n cove red the distance . Brek er went on to the checkered flag a head of Jea n , Pel to . Nelson and Keith Pa tt en (Yam). In ro un d two . it was Nelson's turn . He gra bbed t he lead a nd took off with it. Breker soo n worked hi mself into seco nd . bu t Nel so n was long gone. Breker knew that he still had first paced h im se lf ove ra ll . so he t hroughout th e ra ce, In th e closin g laps . th e two leaders were side by side . but Nelson still got th e moto two win . Pelto again was th ird with Jean in fourth and Patten fifth , Overall standings went Breker, Nelson . Pelto. Jean and Patten. " The 125 Pros were once again taken by Steve Bauer (Suz). He swept two , straight wins followed . as he has been in past weeks , by Clint Carman (Yam ). A new name .a t DeAnza . Vince Van Hook ( Ya m) scored 3-3 for th ird overall . Hen ry Marmolejo is going to be one of the nam es to watch for in the future at DeAnza . He and his Suzuki never gave anyone else a chance in the 250 battl e between Lo pe z. Cliff Lett . Glen Page a nd Bill Ba rlow go do wn to th e wire . Pa ge flew his H on d a to th e fro nt of t he pack ' with Lett , Lopez a nd Ba rlow in hot pu rsu it. Lopez ca ught Lett a nd Page sleeping in t he nort h tu rn a nd ju m ped into the lead for keeps . Lett a nd Ba rlow both passed Pa ge on t he last la p . Ba rlow sprint ed his YZ to a holeshot in the second mo to with Lope z and Lett p ushi ng hard . In t he thi rd lap. Lopez caught Ba rlow on the giant ra mp ju m p a nd pu lled awa y. Lett was a ble to get by Ba rlow a nd fini sh second for the evening. T he 250·Pro ra ce once again turned out to be a brot her act as Tim Lunde ( I -3) cha sed his broth er Chu ck (2 -1 a ro und th e adobe track, besting him in the first mo to bu t fa lling sho rt in the second. trai ling b ro th er Ch uck a nd Joe Plante (3-2). Gardena racer Luke Messer ( 1-2) ju m ped on his big bore Maico and rode to firs t place in th e 500 Pros. Dale Anderson (5-1 ), also Maico mounted , was able to scoop up Second place money . Bobby Ott was the hotshoe in the mini class as he smoked t he usual large crowd of ra cers . Ott rode his Yamaha to runaway victories in both motos , Ascot will run every Thursday night st raig ht th ro ug h October. II It was back to Perris for District 37 scra m bles riders on Sunday with the Lightweights M.e. Sin ce one of th e Dist rict's own c a me h om e fro m t he Na t io nal Ama teur Cham pion sh ip Scrambles in Ka nsa s as the 250cc Na tion al Champ ion . he and the rest of our r iders wh o went we re honored rrackside whi le t he watering truck made its ro unds . National champ Jeff Springma n was all smiles as he a nd the others lined u p for pictures . Along with Jeff some of th e ot hers had brought along their troph ies . Those with trophies wer e Don Fra uenberger , Tony Walton and Rex Hailey riding for Orange County Cycl e ; Da ve Peters fo r Ha rry Foster Triumph and Bu d ,C a rro ll for Cham pion Fra me s. Besid es cheers and ap plause t he riders were presented wit h a h uge motor cycle and flag decorated ca ke a nd two m agnums of ch a mpagne . Need less to say those were whisked ba ck und er cover u nti l t he d ays' raci ng was over; th en enjoyed in t he cl ubhouse . . Not on ly did we have th at ha ppy occasion 10 sha re . but Mike Ti dwell was back out and ra ci ng aga in . Last March ' h e suffered severe spinal inju ries in a crash at Sears Point while road ra cin g that al mos t ended his raci ng career. It was really good to see him out aga in in th e 250 Ex pert wa rs. Tidwell won th e firs t m oro by going to the inside of J oe Steffa n. who is, really a neat racer to watch . Joe ended . t he d ay with three seconds and Jeff showed up his Sprin g m a n ch ampionship form by winning th e last two. Tidwell. who hasn't lost any of his style , has lost a lot of his str en gt h a nd was wisely cooling it a bit a nd emerged third just ah ea d of Bu d Ca rroll . Sam Burns agai n won t he 250 Amateu r cl as s, Ga ry Sm ith to ok ' second with th ree in a row . Dorothy Rowe, who is back fro m the AMA pro ci rc uit with enough po ints to be a pro Junior. didn't hav e her usual good day. Like several others her neat little TT rig wasn't set up to handle the only bumpy section going int o turn one. . While we're mentioning the track . It was good on Sunday. better than the last time out according to riders. Enough 500 ·0pen Novices showed up to have heats and a main .
