Heading iin to the pits Dick Steffa n was the first trail bike with Jeff Moller six bikes back and moving. Lou Peik , Jr. was third "C" bike, Jim Goltra fourth . The T rail Novices and wh ite plates peeled off, smiles a nd all . The winner was trailbiker Dick Steffan , trail followed b y Ted Honnicutt and Trace Willis. T'h e beginner winner was Rick Marlin (250);' Chris Nelson and Ne il Ketner, first and second heavy . Number 779x took second 250 in h is first desert race ; th ird went to Ro d Absher. Heading out on loop two McCracken h a d the lead , Gib so n second then Brad Den ha m . Bob Miller made up six pos itions, running fifth after the first loop . Flying around the loop with. complete abandon of life and limb , Gene Pe ters started back at 53rd. By the ha lfway point of loo p two , he was running 20th and gassin' it. Entering the pits for the secon d time the ra cers were really strung out; by the third loo p there were very few riders wit h company, thanks to the steep uph ill towa rds the end of loop three, plus the rocks.
