Campbell led a similar pack challenging for sixth. Way in the back Hank and Gary Scott were finding out that their choice of a hard tire for the race was definitely the wrong one. Men Lawwill joined their fig~t , th e victim of a sour magneto . It had slowed Lawwill in his heat so he cha nged the rotor. Un fortu na tely t hat was not th e sou rc e of th e problem . Mike Kidd's ride came to an a b rupt halt onl y two turns into th e Nat ional when th e sprocket adapter came loose, .causing the chain to bind on th e count er shaft sprocket. " I knew I cou ld have won, " said Kidd. "Dam n, I'm bummed. This is the third time my luck has gone sour this year when I was .in a position to win . Checkered flags are what get factory rides , not DNFs." Disappointment weighed heavily on Kidd's shoulders. Brow bumped Crabbe for third on lap four and then banged his way past Keener for second two laps later. Eklund then displaced Crabbe iri fourth and the front four were set to the finish from lap six on. Crabbe's slide backwards continued as Campbell and Beauchamp pushed him back to seventh by the halfway flag. By lap 14 Brow had Rut some daylight between himself and the scrap that Keener and Eklund were having. Springer had long since abandoned the high line in favor of a low one when he realized ("W he n I saw how Brow was catching up I dropped down to the low line.") that his lead was slowl y fadi ng : The com bi na tio n of ge a ring to ride in the cushion a nd a rapidly wea ring rea r tire a llowed Brow to mo ve closer yet. Springer slowed no ticea bly on th e final four laps as Brow closed in . Keener and Eklund continued th eir battle. Campbell held off Beauchamp . Crabbe was feeling pressure from Eves who , in tum , had Drake and Schaeffer on his rear wheel. On lap 19 Campbell knocked a carb loose and his XR went on one cylinder. He dropped from fifth to ninth . Campbell, with a look of utter despair on his face sadly said later that it would have been his highest finish ever. ~ Springer led Brow across the finish line on the white flag lap with Brow narrowing the gap on the back straight. Brow's drive from turn four was good, but not good enough. Springer held on to win - by half a length. • SUP ft DE LO FI E,H -eft FE IGO I • B.AII• .liEIII IIA'I:' Alii 25'·5· 4"·5· 45'·5 , AI/A'LABLE , •• A L'"'TE.
