SEPT. 4 Two guys who were neither early n or late . in this year's URA Funky Pumpkin family endu ro and claimed first overall for both loops were Fernando Belair. 250·A , and John Kneifl , open-Ar Both zeroed all checks. including the. tie b reakerl -T he number two spot went to B rider John Ellis. who zeroed all checks and was only three seconds off at the tie breaker. . Claiming first overall on loop one was Robert Langley, SO·C under 16 , who lost only two seconds at the tiebreaker. Sharing second place were Kurt Butler. SO-D under 16. Carol Prade, 200 ·B and Bill Clark. 100-C under 16 . each losing only five seconds. Speeds over the 25 mile first loop ranged from six to 21 miles per hour and were quite compatible for the terrain. The first 14 miles went fairly fast over sand washes and flat terrain that included two fun tunnels . One tunnel was long, dark. and so low that riders had to duck their he ads to get through . Next came the welc ome sight of a 17-minute 'Goodie Sto p' (apple cider and cookies) in the opening of an old mine. This was followed by rocky hills which made the course more interesting. and to add to the variety. it ended with some ridge running into the pits . According to eleven year old Br ad Graham. riding a Yamaha SO, "This was the best enduro I've ever ridden. a nd I really liked that tunnel where it said 'Unscrew your head'," . Mike Goodwin (175B) sai d he liked the variation best on the 35-mile second loop. Speeds ranged from 12 to 36 miles an hour. Terrain was a mixture of everyting, as sweepers Marty fisher . "Mr . CA , AUG . 31 Another good turnout for CMC motocross at South Bay Speedway had the 125 pros showing some exciting racing in the first moto. Jack Keese (Su z), Tony Gomez (Yam) and Terry Shekell (Yam) all jammed into the first turn and Keese quickl y moved int o the lead with Gomez a nd Shekell behind. For the first three laps of th e six-lap race, Keese was cooking. but Gomez picked him off and Shekell got by when Keese went down sho rtly after Gom ez got by. Shekell reeled in Gomez but Gomez looked to be hard to pass . Shekell hung on and soon Gomez went down and Shekell went on for the win with Keese second ' and Gomez third . • In the second moto, the three were in the first turn together again but coming out of the second tum Shekell was ahead and flying. He ran away for awhile until Gomez began catching , him. Shekell was ho lding Gomez off, but on the last lap Shekell's engine seized and Gomez went on for the win and overall for the night. In the 250 pros Aaron Bassett , riding for Competicion Cycles on a KTM, took both wins while J erry Stewart (Yam) finished second overall and Allen Berluti (H us) th ird . In th e Open Pro class , Chris Chaffee (Yam) took th e overall win with some sm ooth riding, while Ma x Maple (M ai) fini shed second and David Gerig (Suz) third. In the 125 Intermediates. Scott Anderson , riding for Escondido Suzuki, took the overall and continues to hold second in the Summer Series. SEPT. 2 Mark Tomaselli (Cycle Town) won both the 83cc·Intermediate and 105cc O pen class with the AME Youth Division at Indian Dunes. In the first intermediate moto Eddie Green was first ou t of the gate. It wasn't long before' Pesky rider Cindy Du mo took over to .lead the troops. T omaselli was right at Durno's back wheel looking for a way around. but the "Shady Lady" held her ground . The race couldn't have been tighter, as Tomaselli rode at Dumo's side through the esses. I Tige Schwartz was his hottest The 125 Pros were out in fine competion, as he seemed to cling to form for the final race on the Nanas' rear wheel while they ran from Bosch '77' Summ er Series. Bob the pack. Kline led the pack up the hill The - Stock class proved more and had a huge flock of riders behind challenging for Nanas. Gary Sailors him. including a new pro.
