THE NATIONAL PAPERS J. c~~ P1Wb41K: By Bob Read Ascot's National on Saturday night, October 8th will again decide the Camel Pro Series! Grand National championship. For the second year in a row the national circuit is heading for the showdown at 'the most famous and fastest dirt oval in the u.s. How come? Well , the final three events, all in ' California, find the San Jose mile on Sept. 25th, the Riverside road races on Oct. 1-2 and then the windup at Ascot on the 8th. Harley factory team riders Jay Springsteen and Ted Boody were only one point apart heading into last week's Syracuse mile. Roberts was still a contender and Gary Scott had made up some ground but was in fourth place. Never mind about the rest of the field. , Jay and Ted quite possibly will decide the tide at Ascot and Kenny and Gary will duel out third in the standings. That's a big prediction, so we might as well keep going and sa y that 'neither Jay nor Ted will win the Ascot final , but one of the two will win the .overall tide that is going to be worth over $30 ,000 in Camel and AMA point fund money alone . San Jose will find Gary Scott as the .defending champ trying to become the first rider ever to win both miles in the same season. His last lap victory over Steve Eklund last May will be worth a repeat match. Springsteen broke at San Jose last spring but will be right with Gary this time for the J>0ints. . Boody got tired at San Jose last time but seems to get stronger and better every time out since then. It could be at least a three-rider fight to the finish, which is so typical of San Jose and their legend-maker mile. Riverside should belong to Roberts, who already won four road races this year and finished second in the other. Scott will also be at Riverside, but Gary has yet to score a single National . road race point in five outings this season. If the King of the Privateers is going to be a tide contender at Ascot the following week. he will have to get ' his road race act together for at least a top five finish . NATIONAL DOUBLEHEADER Motorcycle Racing First On West Coast! Z5~lap (RESCHEDUL ED FR OM PEORIA , ILL .) Frida~, West coast fans , you have lucked-in again - th e best shows on the mile , road ra ce and half-mile, with th e four top riders going for the big pot. Mark your ballots , Springsteen - Boody Roberts ~ Gary Scott. Keep an open mind , don't let brands, racing col ors or home states cloud your guess for th e 1978 Grand National tide. • TICKET INFORMATION: San J ose (408) 438- 3210. Ascot (213) 321-5323. Jay won, becoming the first rider in the 17-year his tory of the race to win and , not call California home, and Ascot the track where he learned to race. But look to Gary Scott to be the world- beater at Ascot. He may miss the tide this year, but he is going to put that same potent Triumph 750 twin into the Ascot National final and he says he is going to win. rr Steepleellase .
