Brad Lackey , who had won all th ree
motos at an International race th e
week before in Switzerland, had
nothing to lose and nothing to ga in in
·Wohlen . He was firmly locked in four th place in the standings , unable to .
im p rove or lose his position. Brad
raced sm oo th ly in the first race to
finish seventh after getting knocked off
in the first corner whil e dicing with
Ja ak for th e lead .
Heikki "Hessu" Pentrila , the Finnish
mechanic who bulletproofed 'Heikki
Mikkola's Yamahas, stood ankle de ep
in the pit area and Sunday morning
and commented, " No I don't have to
work very much today. The bike is
ready to make one lap . That is a ll th a t
is necessary...
.
He was talking a bou t the fact tha t
Mikkola had torn a ligament in his
right hand the week before in the same
Internationa l ra ce that Brad had won .
His doctor told him to sta y off bikes.
But Heikki showed up in Wohlen for
two reasons . . to make his contracted
appearance to collect the start money
and for the party afterwards!
DeCoster ho leshot the fin al moto of
the season, going on to win the Swiss
Grand Prix a nd move a head of
Wo lsink for second pl ace in the stan dings. Ironically, the only G ra nd Pr ix
events tha t Roger won were t he first
and the last of th e season. The GP in
S~itzerland was held on Roger's 32nd
birthday.
.
Graham Noyce and Hakan Andersson swa pped first race places to finish
third and fourth. Andersson's hard .
consi stent riding moved him up to fifth place in the standings, quite a n accomplishment for the '73 250cc World
Champ in his first season in the 500cc
class . Ha ka n scored points in the last
10 races of the season to climb fr om a
very slow beginning,
Fin ishing second was hard for
DeCoster . He had started the season
planning to race two more seasons,
win two World Championships and
then retire with seven 500cc World
titles to his credit , one more that six time 250cc winner Joel Robert . At
the post·race sh ind ig Roger had a few
words to say a bo ut next yea r . " I will
race hard next year, really gas it , and
if I win the Championship I will then
retire...
Br ad L ackey stopped in the second
race when a fla t rear tire slipped on
the rim and made it impossible for
him to continue. Gerrit Wolsink went
out of the ' race when the pain in his
right knee be came unbearable.
The party afterwa rd was a joint ef-,
fort by Camel, Yamaha a nd Honda. A
full-on barbeque, ca ses of ch am pagn e
and wine and music coming from the
huge semi-trailer converted into ~n in formal disco by Honda had the riders ,
all the wives and close people of th e
seaso n getting soused, dancing and
wrestling in th e mud and letting it all
go now tha t the serious racing had
fin ished for another yea r.
A great racing season has come to
an end. Roger and Gerrit will be at the
Trans·AMA , Adolf Weil 'sa ys lie's
going and Bengt Aberg wants to go if
he can get th e support from his spon·
sors. Heikki will rest for three weeks at
home before flying to Japan for three
weeks of testing for next season.
Heikki'sonly plans for the U .S . are to
com pe te in the Anaheim Supercross
nre.
