By the second lap Shekell had m oved into second and set his sigh ts on the distant Bauer. As th e two of them pulled away from th e rest of the field . Iast jump lost it and -wen t d own . Luckily there was en ought dis tance between h im and th ird place for him to recover and still pick up second. The tie breaker went to Bauer with Shekell second and Hollie th ird. The 250 Pros were th e next to try , out the now infamous new course. Mark Rawley, the Graham Sheet Metal rider, broke out on top followed by Danny Jean and Scott Smith. Smith lost his third to MickJacobs by the end of two laps , but it took J ean four laps to find a hole in Rawley's armor and take over the first . Smith was running second with Rawley th ird . On the fourth lap Rawley got by Smith and took over second, but was no match fill' Jacobs. The overall results saw Jacobs come up with the overall with Rawley second and Jean third. Goat Breker didn't have anyone to play with except NorStar teammate Keith Fearing in the 500 Pros, so they went out and played with Breker go ing two for two and the dough . Kelly Callaway, who was scheduled to go . with the two . must have run into ' mechanical problems because he ended up scratch ing for the evening. The end of the Hemet Cycle Center High Point Trophy Series is comi ng to a close , and the top riders a re all within 10 points of ea ch other. Hemet's own Joe Steffen chalked up three first places and the 250 Expert wiri. Mota on e had to be restarted when Larry Bird fell hard from th e nest of h is Montesa , but he was soon back in there f1appingwith the best of them . Steffen flew off the line first a nd left second to Poway's Rich Volk, and third to Dorothy Rowe. T he second go , La rry Bird reall y pecked and pok ed a t Dorothy but the little expert hung in th ere and kept Bird to a fourth , whil e she nosed in ._._.~_._._._ ._ . - third behind the wide lead of Steffen and Volk . . Ed Steffen had th e second semi win afte r . anxious ex pert Mi ke . Montgomery ju mped and the race was restarted . Bob Sanders was second , but uot fo r long: a s p erturb ed Montgomery was thirsty for revenge. Mik e moved closer and close r , but the checkered fell on Ed Steffen . Mik e joined Steffen ' in the main event line up. It was amateur Bud Wanbaugh , bound and determined to take the win , and that he did with th e hot breath of Vince Landry on his neck. . Minnig takes three ' at Corona HM/ST By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA, AUG. ~H Mike Minnig was hotter than a two dollar pistol Wednesday night, and it really didn't make much difference what he was riding. In the Open Money half m ile he climbed aboard Butch Sil vas ' powerful 750 Yamaha and ran aw ay with the race. Tom Heard and Danny Tuttle gave chase , but ended up battling each other with Tuttle getting under Heard on the second lap . H eard returned the favor four laps later when Tuttle went out with mechanical 'p rob lems . Ken Renner had his own problems and never made it to the line. . Minnig sandwiched the Money race with wins in both the short track and 250 Expert half mile. K'irk Johnson and Mike Paulson followed him 'home in both. . Pete Hames and Chris Cannon went at it in the 125 Amateur/Expert short track and half mile events. On the half mile it was "Speedy" Pete_Hames who got out on top with Cannon in t he second spot ' and Rodney Rainey in third . Cannon tried everything short of a gun 'to get by Hames, but nothi ng worked on the seemingly in vin cib le semi rider. Cannon had to set tle for second. David Hulbert picked off Rodney Rainey three laps from the end to collect the show spot. The short track had Kirk J ohnson out,on top with Cannon in second and Ham es t h ir d. Ham es caught everybody off guard on th e second la p and blasted his wa y into first. It too k And along with the American Motorcycle Assoc iation's high speed two wheelers-the circuit's top and tough est riders. The recor d breakers, The big boys.
