IRWINDALE. CA. SEPT. 1 Irwin da le is the biggest of the tracks in southern Ca l. It has bee n called the fastest track , and each week they come u p wit h a • .different win ner . T h is, along with the , turn th ree nudie show , has made it a great place to be on Thursday night . Mark Cherry got the spotligh t back on the tra ck in the scra tch main when he ju m ped in to a n early lead over Bobby Schwartz, Scott Sivadge, and Bruce Penhall. Bruce kept trying to make a grand slam pass on the outside of th e track all four laps, but just could not get th e traction. Schwartz and Cherry battled it right to the finish , ,;vit h the victory go ing to Cherry. Don Pyeatt of South Lake Tahoe had never seen the big oval or the turn three side show , but did find the track much to his liking. He enjoyed a slight advantage in starting sp o ts and worked hard to hold off Kelly Moran fo r his first victory in the Sou thla nd s-' the 0 1 ha ndica p m a in. Marty Smit~: SOOcc National MX Croft 4th for series on victory at 51. Pete In a series that found the top three riders wi thin striking distance of the championship by the last race. Marty Smith took home the honors w ith a solid second overall at St. Petersburg. Tommy Croft 's first overall in the last of the SOOcc Nationals moved him up to fourth in the series standings. Throughout the series-whether the conditions were muddy. dusty, or nearly perfect-Smith and Croft wore Carrera goggles.
