T onka Truck-sponsor ed Jerry Scott topped th e Amateurs , with Pete Klassen and Di ck Al exander com p leting th e top three. Larry Sm ith took th e Novice class. Everette Hatler a nd Kid Koffman fin ished ahead of th e second moto winner, ·Da n Ca sson . who cou ld n't overcome his first-m ota ninth . • Results in Resul ts Section . Bursitis'and bermshots at AME Veterans Cup ~ t hen yielded 10 Pa t J a cob son who . in turn , yie ld ed to .G regson . Azar followed Gr egson 's p ath again. Gr egson led th e first O pe n Pro moro for two la ps but Azar got by Gr egson who ' was side tracked for a moment. He lost no tim e regaining seco nd but Aza r was out of sig ht. Azar led all the way in moto two . Gr egson was second again and Kent Adolphson put toge ther a third and fourth for thi rd place money . Jerry Berggren and Bob Cic er chi ta ng led in th e first turn of the Open Interm edia tes . Cicerchi went down, leav ing Berggren out front but the meeting soon took its 1011 on him , too . His brake lever' was sm ashed in and he crashed his way from front 10 ba ck on th e first lap . Vin ce Figone took over the lead but that came 10 an end when he approached th e crest of Lea ch 's Lump in a locked -up sideways slide when his tranny . went sour. Dave' Campbell even tu ally won th e mot o . Cicer chi returned 10 win round two but Mik e Hi ckman ' s co nsi st a n t seconds topped th e day. • Results in Results Section. Kent McCo n nell won anot her 360 J u nior main and should be tu rn ing Expert if he kee ps it up . Ricky Vassallo fin ish ed second ah ea d of crowd lea sin g Gary Da vis, wh o was Cling his way a round th e high line on a well prepared track: Keith Peehar from Where 's Milpitas? - won the 250 Junior cla ss ahead of hard -charging Ron Whittaker and Dean Cleeton on a good look ing Montesa. Gary Rossi , from the racing Rossi fam ily of Santa Rosa , led a dicing pack of 250 Experts with T im Skov settling for second over John Waldener. Little Tony Deatherage showed that style is more importantthan size with a fine ride from start to finish , beating Glen Olivera and come-from -behind Kim Wilson who 'was hoping for a few more laps on his quick Can -Am. Dominic Salazar started from th e penalty line in his heat and set the track on fire - the rest of the night , winning his heat and the main in the 125 class . The race for second was intense with Steve Berra beating a very determined Craig Russ . • Results in' Results Section, WASHOUGAL, WA , AUG . 21 Washougal's added moisture was what it took for Cla y Azar to be "Wired for go " in all three. pro classes. H e was so hot he was al most untou chable a ll da y. Kevin La ne and Bob Klemp led th e first 125 Pro charge. Mark Gregson held third for a lap but a lap two spill dropped him to 15t h. Klem p lost ground , 100. in that lap leavi ng Ron Pomeroy in secocd , Azar had started from m id pac k and nab bed first on lap four. Lane held seco nd at th e fla g but Pomeroy had yielded to bot h J im Anderson and Ga ry Racca (who had dumped it in the firs t turn on th e ~ratch ) . Gregson rounded out the top SI X. Ron Dimeo dropped out of th e first mota after a bar- bending spill . He returned to lead round two , Lane was holding second again at th e end of a lap. Pomeroy made way from seventh to second in the second lap but retired at midpoint with a collapsed wheel. Azar and ' Gregson played follow th e leader through the pack until they got to Dimeo. At that point Gregson took both Dimeo and Azar. Azar followed into second for top money for the d ay, Lane pulled out a fourth for second money. The 250 Pros was . Gregson's show . He led all the way in the "first race . Azar held second and Dimeo outlasted a battle with Tim Michlitsch for third . Michlitsch led the second round was Eu ropean Scrambles, one hour plus on e lap on a designated six-mile co urse; -T he Gang shared the course with AME's . Vets a nd were grouped according to engi ne displacement. Results of thi s event are pending at the time of this writing. Sunday's event was the b iggie , mot ocross ac tio n on Sp illway'S tough t rac k. Expert , and new gang member. Carl Nelson (KT M) gr a b be d the hol esh ot and exte nded his lead every lap . going I -I for a first overa ll. Maniac Mike (KT M) a nd Jungle Joe ( Ya m) d ic ed for se co n d sp o t through out both mot es with Mik e ta king it at the fin ish line . Kinky Ken . St u b by St eve a nd R o a ch R ich followed . T he Am a teur's "speed y on e" was a new member fro m the La s Veg as cha pter . Ray Ch arl eswort h , who won motos for the go ld . Plucker Paul got off the line slowly bu t was able to slip by several riders to take seco nd place . Even ly ma tch ed riders foug h t for third • place: Driller Dale (Bul). Dorky Da ve (Su z) a nd Beautifu l Bruce (Mai) , with the final decision going to the Driller. Nauseous Norm (Kaw) who la ter said , "T his was it , th e on e ra ce I wanted ," got just that ; first plac e in a hard fought race against other rid ers with th e same mad desire . Amorous Alan (Suz) who was fourth in the first moto. zipped into the second mota lead at the first tum and held the lead until a Green Meany -mounted Nauseous Norm outmaneuvered him . Alan had to settle for second. Begonia Bill ( H a n ), although made to start ' bac.kwards in his second moto for stretching the rubber band in his first start, finished an impressive third overall . Steve Pobjoy, Dung Dennis, Chunky Chuck and Ab sent AI were finishers in that orde r . for their trophies.. Although beaten by Baboon Bob in th eir first moto , Come-an-Chuck came ba ck in the second mota to win overall . Decomposed Dan and Baboon Bob fought an even ly matched race PLYMOUTH , CA , AUG . 28 This was the second Amateur Nationals Qualifier race: The 125 qualifier was the fifth race of the day . Dana Waxham, from Rocklin , never had a serious challenger. He stretched his lead over two -thirds the length of the track. Jim Olson of Phoenix held onto the number two slot for several laps. Then Dave Coupe of Yuba Cit y pulled up to him and a close battle raged for three full laps until Ol son 's bike locked up on him . He eventually got moving again but was a lap down . The 250 Experts were next. Ted Gumbmann from Redding rook th e lead and kept stretching it out th e whole ra ce . Local bo y Jim Lesh iewski ' J fro m Plymouth held second th e whol e ra ce whil e th e th ird spo t changed hands quite often. Eri c McKenna (Re d d ing) hung on to it. As this ra ce was fin ishing th e Open Experts we re s t a rti ng . Chu ck Pettigrew of Lu cerne Va lley had total' control of th e ra ce all th e way. The soft , shady tra ck seemed very much to his lik in g as he flew a ro u nd it , exte ndi ng h is lead to one -and -a- ha lf minutes by the end of the rac e . T op rider from last week 's ra ce , Chip Howell of EI Cajon , working his way up from 11th on th e first la p, had to be satisfied with a fourth spot fin ish. _ The l Sth race of th e- day was th e . second for the 125 Experts. By now it had become very warm . with a hot, dry wind blowing the super fin e dust • around. Waxham once aga in dominated this class with seemingly very little competition. _ f In the 250 class Leshiewski took the _,Ii lead only to have Gumbmann take it away in the second lap when he had problems. Gumbmann , too , had bike problems. It was Allan Bertluti of 1 Ren o who beca me the next leader. H e.TJj;Ii; had been biding his time for four la ps !II in the second spot. Leshiewski was not ') ~ to be held down, however, and once again captured the lead which he held to the finish . Bertiuti held onto second until the last lap when McKenna , who had been dogging Bertluti for several laps , gave it all he had and took over
