Th~y c ame into the event running a close second to Victorville , and went home in the lead, by one pointl With one more race to gain hometown points. a great event is expected August 28th. Terry Fowler (Hon) of Victorville, smoked the Mini Beginner class . winning both motos and placing first over Ben Croel (Yam). Barstow, and third. Carson Johnson (Yam). riding for Ridgecrest. Three Ridgecrest riders placed 1-2-!l for the Mini Novice -Intermediate class: Allen Hopper (Suz) . Jeff Black (Suz) and Pat Galan (Yam). Jeff Black cinched the high points brass for Ridgecrest. Rodney Phelps (Yam) placed fourth , but remained on top for high points in Apple Valley. The IOOcc Beginner motos were identical , with Steve Sanchez of Alhambra riding his Suzuki to the win. IOOcc Intermediate Mark Urseth had a first , then mangled his hand in the sprocket right before the start of the seco n d moto . O u c h l Mark will probably be back for the finals . Barstow's high point trophy goes to Suzuki rider Steve , Chavez. as he battled Hesperia's Don Koch (Suz) to take first 125cc Beginner. Excitement in the first lap of the second moto as a huge pile-up occurred at the bottom of a jump. But C.havez and Koch never saw it as they already had a large lead. Ridgecrest's Joe Leak (Suz) squeezed on through to take a third, and Many Hess (Su z), Lancaster fourth, Palmdale's Tire Man. Jim Sendelbach. took 125 Expen class honors and the Palmdale overall high points. Jim. on a -Yam a ha , placed first - first over 250 and Open Experts, although all classes were scored separately. Barstow's Karl Wilson (Suz) took the Open Expen payback. while the 250 cash award went to Don Simonian (Suz) of Apple Valley. Open Intermediate Clinto Tarvin (Yam) of Barstow had a tough time against Bultaco . rider Terry King, Victorville. but came out on top. Terry, howeyer, added his second place points to his record, to win the Victorville riders high point trophy. Steve Jordan (KTM) of Pa lmdale copped the 250 Intermediate honors with a I-I record for the day . Lancaster faced off against the rest of the hi desert as four of their competitors challenged the 250 Beginner class. Dean Morse took up the challenge and won the brass for Victorville. Lancaster took points and trophies for spots 2, !l. and 4. These Suzuki riders were : Steve McCormick. Doyle Stufflebeam. and Steve Burgess. Scott Walker, Jr. , also on a Suzuki out of Lancaster. not only took both motos for first 250 Novice. but became Lancaster's best. for the high points award. He'd won the first one and was anxious to get with it again. He and Bud Carroll had come through turns one and two leaning on each other literally. Steve had gone low and as he started sliding on up, Bud just leaned down on him. Du e to the Olympic scoring system , we ended .u p with a tie between Chris Cannon and Carroll, each taking a first , second and a third . The juniors of th e 125 class had an exciting moment . Jay Ba les attempted to go under and pass Steve Griffith - he ., onl y succeeded in shoving Steve up off the track where he crashed in the turn one loose stuff. As Bales came around again , Griffith was standing there trackside a tower of wrath. The race end ed and Bales rod e over to speak to Steve ; reinforcements for both riders started heading in and the Sandak referee put an abrupt stop to everything and cooled things down . ' Steve Ka rsten won the class with three straight and Bales second. three times out. Joe Steffen won the 250 Expert class, currently the hottest class to watch. Bud Carroll got such a zap off the line we all expected to see the red flag, but Carroll had read the start so perfectly it was a legal one and the others just could never over come that advantage. So it was Carroll, Steffan and Jeff Springman. Carroll got a sixth in the next moto while Steffen won , followed by Springman and John Sperry. Last moto had a restart after Carroll vanished from view over the top of th~ hill in a cloud of dust. If it's any testimony to the popularity of a rider as to how many run ' to a crashsite to help. then Bud's popular. He just about emptied the stands, He lined up again and was off and running, hustling for the lead but Steffan took it while Lary Bird had to sett le for third behind Carroll . Se veral classes had to run a progressive program and Sandak's alwa ys fa ir when they can be; they had extra semis so that everyone got on the. track at least twice. Semi number two' in th e 125 Novice class had so many pie platesin it , it looked like alphabet sou p . Garth Beaver won the first semi and then the main , followed in by KeithJohnson and Ken Mcintyre. In the 250 Amateurs, Steve Griffith and Tom Walton contested the first spot like they were already in the main , bu t both wanted to transfer directly and only the first place would ; that was Walton. In the main , Jack Smith got out front and went on to get a nice ' little space between himself and Duane Gallager until Mark Cain came up to take second away from Duane. Joel Windham and Bud Wanbaugh settled out first and second in the 500 No vice main . Mike Roach had won his heat but took one of the craziest falls we've ever seen . he and the bike were sort of 'ha lf way down one way, then . botli snapped back up and crashed on the other side. Don "T', Bone" Grigsby won his heat. in the 500 Open Expert class but blew a seal in the process. while Don
