Johnson never had his lead
challenged . Behind him , Gerig,
Fishback, and Roesler played pass and
swap.
Jennings, unmolested in the first
race, was sure getting challenged this
time around . Clark stayed glued to his
fender for two laps then passed him.
Jennings go t it back on the
following lap and held it to the finish,
though he never opened up more than
a few seconds of daylight.
Taylor led the 125s all the way ,
opening up a more comfortable lead.
Roeseler moved past Gerig and
Fishback to occupy second with few
laps left. Larry , however , didn't top
off his tank on the start line following
the parade lap . His Husky was starting
to run out of gas and he slowed, '
allowing the others to pass ,
.
Johnson took the win with a fairsized lead, followed by Fishback and
Gerig. They finished that way overall ,
followed by Gene Cannady on the Bill
Bell/Long Beach Honda four-stroker,
Cannady had finished third in the first
"(moto" . Ba lentine (KTM) and
Roeseler completed the top six .
Jennings and Clark worked . their
way up to the top four overall by the
end of the race. Naturally they scored
the top two overall. Rutten ran
seventh in the second moto, but still
. took third . Scot Hardin (Hus), Jim
Jackson (Hus) , Andy Kirker (Yam),
Steve Holladay (riding last year's
Honda works bike) , Phil Stumbo
(Bul) , and Terry Turner (Yam)
completed the top ten .
Taylor and Jones took the top spots
in the 125 class. Neil Snarr (yam), Jerry
Shore (Suz) , and Danny Winebarger
(Yam) rounded out the top five.
Most of the purse, and by far the
largest number of entrants went to the .
car races. Several names familiar to
motorcyclists did well in the 'ca r races.
Malcolm Smith finished second in the
$18 ,000 "Challenge of Champions,"
and followed it up with a second in
Class 1 (unlimited). Rolf Tibblin
finished the top ten in both Class 9
(1200cc) and Class 1. Roeseler was
entered in Class 9, but the distributor '
rotor broke before he'd gone half a
lap.
