Welton CALIFORNIA CITY . CA , AUG . 21 W ith his usual style and grace . Bob Balentine maneuvered his 400 cc KTM to yet another overall victory at CRe's Californ ia City hare scr a m bles.. When the banner finally did drop it was Monte Lee (250 Ya m) and Mark ' Zoller (400 IT) leading the charge to the bomb on parallel lines. Tom Kelly (250 KTM) followed closely with Ba lentine. Mike Johnston (400 KT M). " Ba d" Bra d Henso n (175 IT) and the usual front runners leading a couple hundred hard-charging desert racers past the smoke , onto the marked course. Just over the first ridge Balentine p ut the move on Kelly and raised his sights on Zoller and the lead . Kelly tucked in behind Ba lentine and hung on . Monte Lee a pparently . got onto some bad lines after the bo mb and started losing overall position and valuable cle ar air. This a llowed severa l riders such as J ohnston and Henson to slip past. out of the dust. About five m iles out . Phil St umb o (400 KT M) got by Henson and started chasi ng J ohnston . Bal ent in e by this time had worked his way past Zoll e r , wit h Kelly following suit , just past the first check point. Kelly stayed with Balentine until he highsided in a corner and tweek ed his handlebars. ' J ust before the end of the first 30 · mile loop Bal entine had 20 seconds over Kell y. who in turn had only a few fe et over ha r d -c h a rg in g Zoller. Coming down pit row Kelly pulled in for petrol and Zoller zoomed past , taking over second s~t. Soon Stumbo eased through the pits as did J oh nston and Bad Brad. Morgan Malocco (400 . IT) was through next at seven th overall and running rather well in spite of a fra ctured swinga rm . First amateur through was a total surprise. Noel J ackson '( 125 Yam!) was d oing a real ' ou tstanding job of riding 'a ligh tweight and kept Monte Lee behind him . Novice Tim Sloan (400 Ya m) rounded out the top 10 on lap one with fellow novice Rich ard Zajic (250 Suz) rig ht behind. St umbo was runn ing well going out for the final la p until h is sile ncer b roke ' off and fell into the ch ain and sprocke t and threw Ph il fro m his cycle . T his pu t Stu m bo and his scoot out of the race . J oh nston ran int o some bad luck also . After one of his best starts of th e yea r . his transmission began to go away and a short distance out on th e second loop it was all neutra ls.
