The second lime off the line. Jerry Shore jumped into the lead with Jim Hale right behind him followed by Paul Lane and Locey . Kurt Headlund , in his third pro race was running fifth and p utting pressure on the leaders . Lane and Ha le had a duel for second with no end in sight. Locey was right on Lane's tail and when Shore went down . they both got by with a side-by side. handlebar-to-handlebar duel for first. Locey took over as O 'Mara started moving up through the pack. Shore went down aga in, trying 10 get by Lane . and O'Mara moved on into second . With O'Mara behind him , Locey was smoking everyone in sight and came down 10 th e checkered flag for a first overall. Hale took second and third went to O'Mara . The 500 Pro race was a battlefield , for Mark White . who took down the overall win , Steve Rawson, . Ron Gibson and Noel Woolard. The first moto was a duel between Rawson and White that lasted right down to the wir e , with Rawson holdin g first. Th e se co n d m ot o wa s a hea rtbreake r for Rawson. He had bui lt a beautiful lea d with White in secon d. Then his rear tir e sta rted 10 go flat. Recreational biker to work with land use planners The Motorcycle Industry Council has undertaken a major new program to encourage responsi ble planning for off-road motorcycle use. MIC has r etained profess ional planning consultant Garrell E. Nicholes , a former Utah Universit y teacher of recreation and dedicated environmentalist who participates in solitude sports (hiking, .backpacking, cross -country skiing , survival expeditions , e tc .) . He served . as a member of the Board of Trustees , Utah Museum of Natural History and the Special' Antiquities Taskforce on Public Education. Mr. Nicholes has also been a n off-road m ot orcyclist for many yea rs. A persona l co m mi tm en t ' to the e n vi ron m e n t, the recreati on p art icipant and the sP '?rt o f m ot orcycl ing has ste er ed him into pioneering the firs t, resource invent ory on off -road recreational vehi cles for the sta tes of W yoming and Utah. Hi s work for those states has been lauded as exc ellent . studying the ·" off - r oa d " ] In . motorcycle user for over a decade , Mr. Nicholes di scovered that many of the public as well as federal , sta te and community planners and resource managers , are unawa re o f. the recreational m otorcyclist. After the newness of a dirt bike wears off . the owner usually matures into a a recr eation al m otorcyclist. T h is biker uses h is vehicl e prim aril y to. participate in o ther outdoor recreation activities or see a part of nature where he otherwise wouldn 't have th e tenacity, time o r ability to visit on foot. Some of the extended recreation he might experience by . motorcycle can inc lude fishing , hunting , picnicking , hiking , swimming , camping, rock hounding . seeking geologic and historic points of interest , photography, exploring , etc. All of Mr. Nicholes efforts have been directed to the recreation motorcyclist. MIC President Alan R . Isley states " W e recognize that our su p po rt for knowledgeable planning for environmental. vresource user , and safety includ es reasonable control as well as responsible development." . Lack of understanding by the nation's recreation planners and 'land managers of how 10 provide solutions to off-road resource problems has led them to shift their planning priorities to other less " th rea tening" areas of outdoor recreat ion activit y. In the 500 Pro . class, Terry Clark, Kawasaki faclOry rider, put his green machine through its paces. I understand his bike is the factory prolOtype for th e '78 Kawasaki and it was fas t! When the gate dropped and Clark took off, he roosted chu nks of dirt . not just dust. Clark , taking over the lead , found some heavy local competition on his ta il. Will Harper was closing fast in second. Steve Rawson was holding down the number three spot and Andy Jannings (C -A -Kolbe) had his hands full holding back Ken Zahrt , riding for Bultaco. Harper was really taking Clark on , but had to settle for second . The se co n d time off the line , Harper took over with Yamaha Support rider R ick Blackwell coming on sirong in second. Clark , in fou rt h , was closing on Andy Jannings. Blackwell went down andJannings was running strong in the second place slot. Clark , closing fast on Jannings , went down in the hairpin turn and wa s set way back in the pack. Harper had a wide open lead and Dean _ a ylo r T moved into third . Clark was smoking everyone in sight , trying to catch the leaders , but he r a n out o( time. Harper rode home to top money for the SODs , Jannings took home second place loot and third went to Clark.
