He blasted away the competition and when Glen Johnson experienced a rear flat tire . Martin had it all to himself. Those daring young men ' on their flying machines. also known as the 125 Amateur classes. were again the largest group at Rio Bravo this Sunday. The new class which is designed for beginners only featured Robert Scott on his Suzuki in the third running of this new event. Scott got a head of John Miller and stayed there getting to the checkered flag first. The 125cc Novice Division was won by John Jackson in a handlebar- to- , handlebar race with Suzuki-mounted Robert Wells . Gary Lowe, who temporarily abandoned his 250cc CanAm , tried h is luck with the 125 riders and managed a third place finish on a Yamaha. Track operator Red -W a ll in g announced that . bicycle motocross would be added to the weekend activities at Rio Bravo in the near fu N ~ . • Results in Results Section. Polley's little Yamaha takes top time on Whitney Hill By Diane Polley WHITNEY. TX , AUG . 6 The 250·foDt Lake Whitney Hill was completely covered with ankle deep sand. Riders who lost speed and momentum for any reason at all ended up with a close look of the surface. Some of the riders on the big bikes using down pipes said that they were under the sand when they went over the ledge halfway up. , Mike Polley on a 250 Cooper was the first of only 15 riders to lop the hi ll. He had to work a Uttle at the top but a time of 17.69 seconds put him in first : The spectators had to wait until the 250 Sportsman class for the next rider to make the top . David Carder and his 250 Buhaco . went over in 13 .63 seconds; a ride that netted him .a first in his class to match Polley's first' in the' 250 enduro class. Tom Anderson was really happy with his 500 Yamaha after the first round . His time of 10.17 seconds had put him on top in the 500 class and given him a good shot at beating his arch-rival Duffy Douglas, who was having a hard time in both the 250 and 500 classes . Tom thought he had a good shot at top time after the Exhibition class ran and no one hadcome close to challenging his time. but Henry Polley had not ·been able to start his Yamaha and had a bad holeshot on his Triumph. When things started rolling again Henry let the little gt!ys have their try and then took his first run on the Yamaha. Even though the back end of the bike was quite busy on the: loose hill. he eased Anderson out of top time and first in the 500 class with a 9 .92 second clocking. Polley and Anderson sat back and let the other riders have their try in the Exhibition cla SS before they squared off again . This time Polley was on a 650 Triumph with chains while Anderson was sticking with his 500 Yamaha . Tom went first and .had a . good enough run to move him from second to first but it did not get top time back. Polley's Triumph was the last bike that had a chance of going faster and he really wanted to get top time 'o n his Triumph instead of the little Yamaha . The chains on the rear tire really took hold and away he went towards the top in what was obviously a fast run. When" the 'd ust had. cleared his time was 9.94 seconds. good enough for first but not the fastest of the day . • Results in Results Section. ,Griffit h takes two at Crested Butte By Dan Clery . MT. CRESTED BlJITE. CO .JULY 24 . Fo ro the second year traight-" , Morril Griffith showed up with his Yamahas for a clean sweep at Crested Butte's motocross. Griffith didn't seem to be even remotely affected by the competition as he handily whipped the opposition in both motes . He was . however, pushed at times by some fine riding by Mark Brozina . Brozina was never far behind and at one point actually caught Griffith . but then Griffith quickly gained distance agajn and held firm . Brozina was spectacular off the infamous floater bump . The crowd would start calling for antics some 200 feet before his arrival and Brozina never let them down . Some say they counted six or seven different air moves before touchdown . In the support classes. 15 year-old Brian Roberts (Hus) , rode very well to take a tie breaking first place over . Alan Haley (Yam ). In the. 250 · . Amateur class , Driegan Wieder completely wore out second place finisher Mike Perusek (Can-Am). Wieder did do some fancy maneuvering in the first moto as he shagged Perusek until he got the white flag . Perusek must have had his spot picked out because when he came around for the checkered he had taken the lead. Tom Cooper, fresh from his win in Leadville. tied for first place in the Open Amateur class but lost the overall in a lap time tie breaker to local man Mike Heftner. Crested Butte had a special treat for the fans at intermission. Cralsbad has its Art Scholl for half time show ; Crested Butte has it "Klunkers." First place honors went in this classic to local hotshot . Vic Dennis.
