/ experts would be riding two 30 ·minute • motos . The Open Experts were on the lin e first. a t 10:30 a.m. Darrell Shultz (Bul) wasted no time in . gra bbing the lead. as he got th e holeshot. Shultz had the tra ck d ialed. as he ope ned up a n enormous lead over Daniel Waller (Mai) who was running in second. With that in cr edible lead . Schutz could have go ne to his pits for some Gatorade and still hav e had the lead when he returned . Shultz went on to win 't h e first m oto , with Waller fini shing a distant second . ' In the second Open Expert moto , Shultz had to work for the win. Waller took the lead away from Shultz on the first lap. Shultz took th e lead back a nd started pu lling away from Waller. It looked as th ough W all er would have to settle for second place. Shultz was 'definitely having some problems with only a few laps to go . Waller cut his lead in half as th ey to ok th e white fla g .· Shultz got out of shape on the uphill and Waller was on his rear fend er. Shultz recovered in tim e to remain in t he lead to th e chec kered flag . . Shultz again go t th e holeshot , th is time in t he 250 Expe rt moto , on his Ossa . CA , AUG. 6 Fenn Pervier motored his Bultaco around a high, fast lin e to take the 360 Expert win ahead of Charles Gondola (Yam). Steve Mertens held off John Gu glielmetti for third . T he 250 Experts put 'on a show all night with Rod Spencer (ass) leading th e gang . There was plenty of action b ehind - h im as Gary R ossi , Mike - Delacy and Tim -Skov scrambled for runner·up. Ro ssi g r a b bed it with Dela cy's Yamaha t hi rd. Skov flew ac ross th e lin e fourth on a very quick Can -Am . T he amateur a nd no vice classes found tfie bumps 'a nd slick spo ts with ma ny sp ills and red fl a gs bu t fortunately everybody found their fee t and got back to ra cin g . It was H ays' d ay, as he took both th e 80 Modi fied and 100 Minis. Chandler settled for two secon d s. N ov ic e Ricky Cremona ca rried home tw!' trophies with wins in th e 80 St ock and then for the 80 Mod ifed. J eff Iwa naga (Su z) and - Ron Ma yfield (Ya m) came across-t he fini sh lin e in a d ea d heat in the Novice 125s. Malt Pem be rt on ( Ya m) took th e checke red in the 250 Junior cla ss and . with it, th e season high poi n t lead. Paul Iwanaga (Ya m) made his first' ex pert sta rt a winning on e. ViewMX .By Jan Newman SANDY . OR,JUL Y 31 Every race was a hot contest-today as Oregon's built-in a ir conditioning system failed and the temperature rose ' into the 90s. Michael Kinnear paid most .dearl y due to th e hea t in the first Open Pro moto. He was ou t front and reall y cook ing when. with only three laps to go, he co lla psed at t he finish lin e. T he lead th en fell . to Hawthorne Wing . J ohn Atwood reco vered from a fi rst lap cras h to fin ish seco nd. Mot o two fou nd Kirk Severson ou t fro nt for t he first few laps. Atwood fou nd a hole and took co m ma nd for the rest of th e race. Kin nea r was a b le to retu rn but was off his first moto pace. Da ve Hilton saw his hopes for the top , M in i Intermediate hardware dissolve int o a cloud of dust halfway into the second race. He came over th e fin ish jump a little out of shape and landed in a wild tail over tea-kettle m ix up with his bike. Both were only scraped and bruised. Randy Thompson got the brass. Bob Haynes and Lonny Macy exchanged one-two spots for Mini Juniors with Haynes gaining th e edge. The 125 Intermediate ' battle was a real sizzler. Two riders made their first a p pea ra nce in th e class today. Kevin Ford just graduated from the 125 Juniors and Kevin Tom asin i came up fro m the Min i Expert ranks. They really m a de th eir presence felt. Moto one was led a ll the way by Leonard T rujillo. Behind him Ford and Tomasinidiced with ea ch other on th e ir way throug h the pa ck . Bill Naylor held firm ly to seco nd until he and Tom asi ni tangled bars in a turn and Na ylor became a close-u p tree inspe ctor . At th e flag it was Trujillo, T o masini and ' For d , There we re p rot ests m ade against. Tomasini for cu tt ing th e co urse . He adm itted to getti ng ou t of shape a nd go ing inside a tire marker . He, was penalized on e posit ion for th e trip. Trujillo led th e second moto also ; with Ford, Scot Greene and Tomasini after him . Midway into th e race Ford nabbed th e lead but had to earn his wa y to first in ch by inch as both Trujillo and Tomasini were hot on his trai l. The first 250 Intermediate results changed drastically in the last turn. Bill Holtman was being lapped and pulled off a t the tight corner when he he ard the lead bike of Bob Cicerchi appro a ching. When Cicerchi had passed he pulled ba ck on right in th e m iddle of the battle betw een Ga ry Fisher, Lyle Schoppert and Dick Rolli . In th e ensu ing confusion, Fisher lost his second spot to Schoppert. Ga ry m anaged to hang onto seco nd in the next race a fter losin g th e lead to Mike W al ker.
