Corky Keener put his factory Harley right on , Reust's rear wheel at the finish . DII • ~ t iTrophy Race "Any time you win you feel good ," sa id Corky Keener of his victo ry in the Trophy Race . " Bu t it sure would have ' been nice if it had been the National. " Keen er led from the first turn with David Aldana challenging in the opening laps. Except for some shuffling in the early laps of the National , there was very little passing. What there was of that . though was enough ' to cause. anyone to deScribe it. as "onehelluva lot of racing. " Kenny Roberts led the three-row (6· 6·2) , 14·rider field into turn one with en ough bashing a nd banging going on to satisfy any tigh t enthusiast. Brow, Poovey, Eklund, Boody and Hocking tailed a long the closest with the rest of the rield a heartbeat away . As the . pa ck exited turn two ,on the second lap, Roberts found himself , pushed out toward the wall as' Poovey, Brow and Eklund banged past. Righ t on Roberts' wheel came Hocking, Elo , Boody, Scott and Cartwright intheir own battle. • One more lap and Roberts and Hocking were set as fourth a,nd fifth to • the flag. Boody and Elo would trade places on lap 18 for sixth and seventh. The final 17 laps were short track racing at its best: no quarter asked , none given , wheel -to -wheel bashing and banging for the lad . t. Poovey couldn't shake Brow, who had Eklund glued to his rear tire in a six-wheel duel to the finish . , / Poovey held off all charges sometimes barely , sometimes brilliantly - until lap 14. Eklund, in second after a turn three dive-under pass of Brow on the 10th - Ia p , was ·tu rning the heat up . On lap 15 Eklund 'used the move he had put on Bro w on Poovey for the lead . The battle continued with Poovey now glued to Eklund's rear wheel and Brow only feet behind , r eady to take advantage of the slightest mistake . 1 Poovey, like a hunter stalking his . p re y, waited . He got his chance and slipped under' Eklund as the pair exi ted turn four cha rgi ng for the wh ite flag and the final lap .. Ii But it wasn't over yet. Sid e-by- side past the fla g sped Poovey and Eklund with Brow a breath behind. Poo vey went low , Eklund high a nd th en down and under for th e lead as Poovey slip ped high for jus t a sp lit second . Eklund had the ed ge going in to tum three , but Poovey got a wheel under on . the inside line. .Eklund wouldn' t budge and Poovey, whose tire wasn't sticking as well as Eklund's, knew he had 'only the remain ing yards to the flag to our-drag Eklund for th e win .
