When the dust had cleared , Goat Breker (390 Hus) and Jeff JenningS P ~ 5 · Su.z) ~~d. , dominated their classes, while Wayne Boyer (250 Yam) survived a war of attrition to top his class . R aci ng World hosted this q ualifer and will ha ve another (250 or 500 National qualifier with a support class to be announced) in Sep tember, These races are being run in the hopes of drawing a National motoc ross date; hopefully, according to promoter Ron Hendrickson , the weekend after Hangtown . . The 500 class , consisting of about 20 riders , went first. Goat Breker , riding an ex -works 390 Husky that he just received , won both motos by huge margins. In the first moto, Arizona's 'Roger Jones (Ya m) took the le~4 ~it!J , Breker lea ding the chase. Breker got past after a couple of laps and started to stretch his lead while Jones took the first of several falls in a mudhole 'crea ted by over-watering turn two . Da r rel l Schultz (370 bul) , a successful D -36 motocrosser from Sa cramento , Calif. moved int o second. Also, running well w~s Jeff Foland on the Knobby Shop four - stroke Honda , though he later slowed and finally DNFd . Rick Blackwell (Ya m) , who recen tly journeyed from Austin , T exas. for a tour of du \y in the SoCal mot ocross wa rs. spe nt a couple of laps getting used to the track . When he started . moving he was in about 10th plac e . He passed Dan Waller (Ma i) for third at the three -quarter mark of the 30 · minutes-plus-two-laps rnoto. The finishing order in the second mo to was the same as far as the top four were concerned. But it was Blackwell with the holeshot , followed by Craig Adams (KTM) , who finished ninth in the first moto. Adams passed Blackwell at the top of the long uphill. Adams led for a little whil e. until Breker moved from fourth. took the lead and started another runaway. First-rnoto runner- up Schultz crashed and was funning last when he got going. . By the end of the race, Schultz passed everyone except Breker to take second . Waller moved by Adams to finish fourth, a nd co m plete the same order found in the-first ro und . Suzuki's Jeff Jennings completely dominated the first 125 moto, Dave Taylor (Hus) took the holeshot but Jennings passed him on the second lap, and disappeared from the pack. Behind him , Mike Pillar (Suz) ran in I second.. .whilc , .. ~obby Jones I ( S U.Z ~ ' moved quickly through the pack to arrive on Pillar's rear fender. After a couple of laps, JoneS moved past Pillar and held second to the end. Pillar spent the rest of the race trying to keep Jack Keese ( Ya m) from g etting around, which he accomplished . Donny Ca nta loup i (Yam) who had done poorly the first moto, grabbed the second moto holeshot , followed by Phil Crane (Suz ) and Pillar. Jennings was running fifth and not moving up as quickly as many people expected. Finally Jennings was in second. and Cantaloupi, according to a member of his pit crew, had a badly faded monoshock . Jennings got by , but before he did, felt ' Canraloupi had been hitting the brakes and blocking hi", in the corners. " I yelled at him a nd told him to 'q uit it,' but he kept .on . So I decided I' d teach him a' lesson ." Jennings pu lled ahead , let Cantaloupi catch up , then butted ' him . This h a ppened a.few more times .· . There were harsh words later in the pits . and Jen nings ' admitted he didn't feel very good about the incident. Behind the action up front , Jones 'moved into third. Dave Taylor who had gotten started well ba ck in the pack. put tog ether a charge that carried h im to fourth at the flag . followed by Michael Goodrich . Crane , Pillar and Keese . J ennings , Jones , Pill ar, Keese and Crane finished in that order overall. The 250 clas was by fa r the largest , • with 40 entries. There had been 41 , which would ha ve required qualifying races . but T im Tolar switc hed at th e last minute to th e 500 class. J ennings. fresh fro m his first 125 win . took the holeshot. T he second tum mudhole removed a number of riders from content ion when there just wasn 't enough ro om for all 40 riders to get around the mild a nd sta lled riders. Jim Gibson (Ya m ) and Oregon's Mark G regson (Suz) soon moved into second and third , and first and second when Jennings crashed in a turn . After ,a wh ile , Gregson took the lea d , only to d urnpit in a corner and hand it back to Gibson. Wayne Boyer moved , through the pack almost unnoticed a nd fin ished the moto in th ird behind the scrapping Gibsonl.Gregson . duel. Clark Jones (Mai) was fourth . Dave Eropkin (Ya m) ho leshot th e second rnoto, with th e first moto win ne rs back in th e pack. Darrell Schultz Oss). runner·up in the Open cla ss and '21st-place finisher in th e first 250 moro, "too k the lead and opened up a big gap. Behind him: Gibson tangled handlebars with another rider and went down before he'd advanced much beyond fifth . Gregson lost a motor mount bolt. " T h e th ing wou ldn't idle down ar.d I was afraid of crashing," said Gregson , who lost a couple of laps having the bolt replaced . By mid -more. Schultz's pursuit was led by Boyer, Jones , Monte McCoy (KT M) and Andy Kirker ( Ya m ) . Eropkin faded to seventh. Lapping a rider up the long hill, a rock knocked th e air filler neck from Schultz's for kcap. causing hi m to DNF. W hen the scorer's nightmare was decided , Boyer won with a 3-1 , Jones was second at 4 -2, Mark Gambetta (Suz ) finished third wit h a 7·6 and Kirk er (10·4) took fourth. The Bosch track , laid out on ' the side of a hill , d ried out quickly, desp ite frequent wa terings between motos, The dust was thinned by a breeze and racer visibility was fairly good. • Results 125: 1.
