In the manner that has become 'all too
familiar to the competition, Team Honda riders
, Marty Smith and Tommy Croft ran away with
first and second places overall in back-to-back
500cc Nationals.

At the St. Peters, Mo. event, Smith and
Croft predictably grabbed the first moto holeshot
on their RC-400 Elsinores TM .and danced away ,
from the pack. In the second moto, two strong
performances secured first and second overall for

Marty and Tommy.
The following week's battleground,
Unadilla, N.Y, turned out to be the roughest .
track faced this year by AMA National riders. But
Smith and Croft were up to the challenge. Their
Elsinores put down great traction and handled
the ruts, potholes and whoopers with ease. Riders
on lesser machines took a pounding, unable to
'give the Honda duo adequate chase, Again, .Smith
.
placed his Elsinore in the winner's circle with
Croft tightly filling Marty's shadow for second.
For Honda fans, it's an exciting National
series. Even more so for the riders. Especially
MartySmith. He's the first rider in AMA motocross
historyto not onlywin Nationals in all three displacement Categories: 125,250 and 500, but to score
TWO National wins in each class. And Smith is also
the first American rider ever to complete a "Grand
Slam" in AMA motocross by also winning Stadium
SuperSeries, Trans-AMA and Grand Prix (both stateside andEuropean) events.
The 500cc National season is now half
over and Team Honda is out in front and going
strong. Will Marty Smith now become the first
rider ever to be AMA National Champion in more
than one class? The way he's going, don't bet
against it. To Marty, first seems to come naturally.
