:............................................................................................................ ... .' ." divided between gullys and piles of boulders, with all but the first-time beginners riding four loops. Sections 4-5 a nd 7-8 were cont in uous while the rest were individual "traps." Worthy of particular mention was the "save" by Matt Pritchard while attempt ing section seven , a particularly formidable . stac~ of boulders, with a final vertica l nse of some four feet near the exit. Matt didn't quite get his Bult aco completely over this monster. As his front wheel aimed for the clouds, he stepped off the machine. The first step was about six feet straight down! He merely spun around on t he rear wheel while descending, hanging on to the bars all the way, leaping from rock .to rock and coming to rest on the trail , some 25 feet below - intact! A less experienced rider -wou ld have dashed his scoot to bits and bled a lot. Hey all of you hard working checkers , thanks again for making this a fun trials. • -Rainey sizzles, cooks T-Bone in Corona half mile By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA ,JULY 27 W ayne Rainey and Don Grigsby held th eir own "N ation al" in the Corona Ra ceway Money half mil e and by their performances you would have thought th~re was a million dollar purse. Ram ey was aboard Mike Minnig's 250 Yamaha while "T -Bone" Grigsby found a ride on Bu tch Silva 's 750 Yamaha. If you thought it wouldn't be a contest, you were wrong. It was Rainey off the line, first as usual, with T -Bone in second a nd Rob Selvy third. It became a battle of skill - Rainey's ability to get his 250 through the turns fast enough to hold off the more powerful 750. At the halfway point, t he edge had been all b ut cho pped off and Rainey was holdingon by the skinof his teeth. On la p six, Grigsby m ade his mov~ and took Rainey. Now it was a quesuo~ of Ra ine y's ability to co~e back. Ra l':ley d id on lap eight. Gn gsby went high and Rainey slipped under him on the low side. It was Rainey's fr om there on out, not by much but enough. Selvy held off everybody else to take the third. Rainey topped a 12-man fiel d to win the 250 Expert half mile. As usual he was first off the line with Stan Kinsey and Dylan Neihart in .second and third. Neihart got by KInsey on ~he second lap when Stan went way high through the turns. Eddie Lawson also took advantage of Kinsey's mist~ke to move into third but was obviously having bike problems, whi ch fin~lly took him out two laps later . Bn a n Thompson moved up to do battle and start ed working on Kinsey . O n the white flag lap he got him and captu~ed t hird . Rainey was an easy first WIth Neihart second. "T- Bone" held off all comers to win 1 he Ope n Amateur/Expert half mile t but special note s~o~ld be tak.en of am ateur David Skirvin who did an outstanding jo b holding off Boe Kyzer for second. Eddie Lawson had the TT wired from the start to win the do ugh and he had som e good competition .to go against.*Joe Steffen, always a n~er t? reckon with, was right on Lawson stall but they both messed up at the same i ime and Lawson recovered faster . Heading in to the Svturn , Lawson had it leaned over much too far and - literally bounced it off the footpegs to correct his mistakes. How he did it, no one has figured out yet. Lawson also added the Open Amateur/Expert TT to his night's efforts. Kirk Johnson had a fu~1 evening for himself. He started with the 125 Amateur/Expert TT, going wire to wire . The battle for second was much tighter. Bobby Garabedian held it second for two laps and then David Hulbert took over for one lap, only to lose it back to Garabedian. Garabedian didn't fare much better the second time around. He slid out on the straightaway and Robert Pfetzing was there when the checkered flag came out to claim second with Scott Polson getting up for third . Garabedian, much more at home on the ha lf mile , was ready and took the lead off the line in the 125 Amateur/Expert go and gave it up to no one. Scott Polson had the second and Todd Brown was sitting in third . They held positi ons u ntil the white flag la p an d then Brown took Polson to come up with second. • Results in Results Section . Miller takes two; Steiner over Spielman at CoronaMX By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA ,JULY 22 The women came to Coron a armed with the rumor of a very possible race.for them in the near future , and provided the spectators with some of the best ra cing of the night. The two main contend~rs were Carey Steiner and Barbara Spielman . The first moto was Sp ielm a n's as she got an early lead on Sta r Kimpston and Steiner. Carey, stuck in traffic, had to settle for the third . The second moto was a d andy. It was again Sp ielm a n on top bu t this tim e Steiner was right behind he r. It ca me dow n to the last la p , when Ca rey flew down ~he hill a nd passed Barbara .r0r the ~m. Kimpston , not far ou t of It , was. thi rd. The third moto bel onged to Steiner as she got a super start and never loo~ed back. Spielman closed the ga p but Just didn't have enough to d~ better th,an second. Kimpston took third and third overall. T he evening ended with Carey and Barbara each tied with five points but Carey's comeback made the difference and the win was hers . Marty Miller and Goat B r~ker ~ent at it in the 250 Pro go, WIth Miller taking the win in spite of a strong argument from not only Breker but Danny Jean. Moto one had Miller in command of the lead. J ea n , in second, was on much shakier ground as Breker nip'perl at his heels all a rou nd the 1\4 · mile course. Jea n was able to hold o~f the Kawasaki rider but at the end It was a photo finish with the nod going to Jean by a silly millimeter. The second round saw Miller again off on top with Ken Taylor in the second and Breker and Jea n in third and fourth. By lap two, Breker had taken care of Taylor and went Suzuki hunting specifically, Miller's. Miller proved to be the illusive fox and Breker had to be co ntent with second . Jean, after getting by Taylor on the third lap, ~ot stuck in traffic and en ded the evemng tied with Bre ker but lost second place on the tiebreaker. Breker came back strong in the Open class , taking both motos wire to (Con tin ue d on page 24) ALBANY DELTA PARK FOX HOLLOW SEPT. 6 SEPT. S SEPT. 10 MULKEY O.R."- PARK WASHOUGAL SEPT.
