in Texas, and Rick Burgett rounded out the top ten. By the end of the first lap, Hannah had established himself in the lead, a margin he would extend to five seconds over the second place man by the end of the second lapl Gaylon Mosier was defending second place from an all-out attack from Jimmy Ellis, and both Pomeroy and Staten were harassing Danny LaPone for founh place. On the third time around , Pomeroy winged his RC400 around LaPone and J immy Ellis squeezed his protOtype 366cc Can-Am into second, leaving Mosier's Maico to fight off Pomeroy for third , The pace seemed far too fast for the scheduled forty -five minute moro on the extremely rough natural terrain Unadilla course, and the passing action kept people standing and shouting all around the long track, Ten minutes along, Hannah , Ellis and Mosier seemed fa irly secure in the top three places -- Hannah had an eight second cushion over Ellis, and Mosier was three seconds ba ck. But the next fou r positions were anything but settled as J im Pomeroy tried to hold back a hard three-man drive from Rex Staten, Steve Stackable and Many Smith . By this time, Danny LaPone had fallen back off the fron trunners' pace and cruised in tenth place. "Thatcarburetor, " Pat Alexander, Laf'orte's mechanic would say later. . "It must have an air leak in it or something. I changed it, using the sam e jetting in the new carb, and the bike ran ' perfectly." Unfortunately, LaPorte couldn't remedy the ' problem until after the first moto had fin ished , and trying to nurse the lean-running machine through put him back in eighth at the flag . As Danny faded , Rex Staten came on stronger, passing Pomeroy on the fifth lap. The move put the Team Harley-Davidson rider into fourth place, so when Jimmy Ellis dropped out a lap later. he received third as a gift from Can-Am. jimmy's gas tank had come adrift. He paused at the mechanics' area to tell his father George about it, then returned to the fray . But on the next lap , the flopping tank pulled the fuel line loose and the bike quir. He then had to stop again to have the tank bungee corded in place, losing many positi ons along the way. Jim Pomeroy also d ropped from contention at about the same time Ellis was having his problems. Riding with an extremely painful right shoulder injury. Pomeroy was too stubborn to skip the race and have the injury treated. "I've got all next week to recover," he'd say, a bit wryly, in the pits bet ween motos, But he was determined to race at Unadilla. The pain caused him to fall near the 15 minute mark. and although he did a fancy two-step to avoid landing on the shoulder, his chance to place with the leaders was gone in exchange for a distant l Sth, On the seventh lap , Hannah and Mosier remained seemingly secure in their own worlds ahead of the positionswapping action. Smith was hounding Stackable unmercifully for third, a pOsition he'd take over on the next tiine around, Steve held tight to Marty's rear fender, sta ying well ahead of Ricky Burgett, Rex Staten, Tommy Croft and Kent Howenon unt il his Maico quit only minutes later, ~I M ';'A rock went through tne ignition cover ." Stack's mechanic Bernie Thompson explained between motos as he and Selvaraj Narayana worked to replace the broken metal cover and reset the ign ition which had been 'jarred out of adjustment.
