Some new names were on top of the 250 Pro class at DeAnza this 1 week. Pete Peterson (KTM) has ' ~ been laying waste to the 250 ·Intermediates for the last few weeks. so he decided to try his hand against the ' lexpert s. Moto one found him grabbing the holeshot with Bill Pelto (Ya m) 'and Mike Welker (Suz ) right behind. Pelto wasted no time in getting around the KTM pilot and soon situated himself -safely in the lead. In fourth place. Tim Welker (Suz) held Dave Ohl (Suz) and Tim Holm (Yam ) at bay . Peterson kept a strong second for most of the opening laps, then his KTM mysteriously came to a halt and refused to start. Mike Welker was now in second and ahead rof Tim Welker by a hair. Tim applied pressure for most of the race. then . with two laps re maining. he fou nd an opening. As they crossed the finish line . the order was Pe lto . Tim Welker . Mike Welker . Dave Ohl and Tim Ho lm. In moto two . it was Tim Welker all the way . Pelto got off to a bad startr but quickly cut his wa y through the pack. Mike Welker held the number two spot until lap six . when a hardpressing Pelto got by.· For the rest of the ra ce . Pelto tried to catch the leader , but couldn 't before the checkers came out. Welker got the second moto , and the overall. victory. Pelto got second and Mike Welker got third place money. The 125 Intermediates also had an interesting race . Mike Sudber (Suz) shot into the lead of moto one. Be hin d him , Danny Bu rtt (Ya m ) and Craig Gormley (Yam ) held off Woman's National Champ. Sue Fish (Yam ) . Vincent Gonzales was right on her tail. and really moving. On lap four , the lead went to Burtt, while Gonzales got by Fish for fourth . Not stopping there, Gon zal es put the move on Gorm ley and then inherited second when Sudber d ropped ou t. Burtt wen t on to win with Gonzales close behind. Moto two saw Gonzales ahead from beginning to end . Bu rtt followed , lead ing Fish and Gormley . There was virtually no change throughout the race . Gonzales did it once more in the final round, insuring a firs t overall. Burtt took second and Sue went home with third place honors. • Results in Resu lts Section. The experts took the night off and left the track to the novices, resulting in some pretty hairy races. Rick Emmal (Yam) was the 125 Novice Main Event winner after taking first and the direct transfer from the second heat. In heat one. it was Stan Galvez and .scott Campbell one and two to earn reserved seats in the main. Kevin Mason followed Emmal on to , the main from heat number two . Hal Woods fought it out with john Elecht in the 125 Novice Semi. Woods led for the opening la p . then Elecht cleared the woods and took the lea d . jeff Conn and Mark Manley were the last riders to join Woods and Elecht in the main from the semi. Emmal shined in the main . He pulled the holeshot off the line and made a beel ine to the front of the pack. Emmal continued to pull away leaving Elecht and Galvez to duel for second. Elecht was second until Galvez caught him off guard on lap three and passed him. Elecht wasn't going to let that second-place trophy slip through his fingers . but he didn't have to pass Galvez . Galvez got over anxious and dumped it ' on the final lap leaving Campbell in third. The Open Novices practically took up the whole races . Twenty three riders were signed up in this class and tllree semis and three heat races would qualify eight riders for the main . Bud Wanbaugh, Mike Digenan and Steve Nelson went straight to the main from their heats. In the main . Bud Wanbaugh had an easy shot at the win and each la p he put more distance between himself and the num ber t wo rider . Steve Nelson. Nelson and Michael Roach were in line for the second and th ird place trophies a nd both had sol id positions.
