(2 13 1882·8272 Ascot Every Thursday Nigh t 16 Motocross were on hand for Saddleback's Saturday MX with the Women's Nationals not too far off, most of them wanted to get in all of the extra laps they could. Dede Cates (Suz) who always does well against the gu ys on Sundays took the first moto win with Barbara Spielman (H on), Lorie Watson (Suz), and Debbie Lutz (Suz) fin ishing after her. In the second 125 Pro women's race Spielman and her Honda took the win and the overall. Lori Watson got the next pa yba ck. 250 rider Kitty Nichols who is Ms. L for the MSL Company got th e top points in her division . Rox ie Klatt (Yam) and Myriam Rodriguez (Hon) were th e 'top fini shers in their cla sses. Tim Lunde (Yam ) was having much better luck this week in the 250 race as he' got the holeshot and the win . Last week while going for th e win his ch ain came off and got eaten by th e sp rocket. Throughout the enti re ra ce th e T&D shirt of Lunde was seen a t the head of th e 250 pa ck. Dave Miller (Yam) and KTM rider Steve Rhyan followed but wer e unable to ge t around Lunde. J eff Vidic, who seems to be eq ually comfortable on bo th a 250 and Open bike, chose to do ba ttl e with th e 250s. Jim T arantino (Suz) a nd Doug Boyd who wea rs Orange County Cycles colo rs fin ished th e race next. Vidic got off the gate first in th e second moto to lead th e ot he r rid ers up th e sta n hill and around We bco Hill. Lunde came up from several places back and ca ptu red the lead in no tim e, Ste ve Rh yan , wide op en bu t alwa ys th inking, mo ved up on Lunde and when th e rea r end of his Yamaha got away from Tim and he momentarily dumped his mount Rh yan ripped around him . Steve won th e moto but Lunde got th e overall and th e biggest pan of the payback. Honda's youngest and hottest new rider Warren Reid got both moto ho leshots for th e 125 Pros and won the overall. All three classes of p ros go at the same time so there was a lot of competition but Warren just poured on th e power of his Jon R . tuned rocketship and he flew to th ird bike. Gregg Toyama and his new FMF Don Emler preppred Suzuki spent most of the 45 minutes doing battle with John Bassetts' "Flash" J im Gib son . Gib son eve ntua lly got around "Toyo ta" Toyama a nd go t th e second place money. Brett Meyer (Yam) and Kurt Sofk a (Yam ) fin ished the day in th e fou r/five slots . Col e Bros. ' Mai co rider Greg Blackwell started the action in the first of th e Open Pro races with Bob Elliott (Suz), David Gerig (Suz) and Robert " Ba ba rino" Marino (Yam ) following the leader. Chip Howell (Hus) took over fourth putting Marino back to fifth . In t he second moto the Austin, Texas import Rick Blackwell was soon in command of the lead. Rick is on e of th e top pros in the state of T exas. He is very serious about his racing and has recently moved to Southern California. Rid ing as a privateer, he rocketed his 400 Monoshock ahead of some of the finest rid ers in California. Elliott and Marino were doing th eir usual hot dicing when they both 'ate som e dirt and had to get re-started, Elliott work ed his way back into second with Yam a ha mounted Tim T ola r riding across the finish line third and Gerig fourth . Elliot tops Carlsbad Open Pros By Chuc k Burris CARLSBAD, CA, AUG . 7 The Open Pros started out the racing progtam at Carlsbad Race~a y and Steve Rhyan riding for Competition Cycles on a KTM quickly took the lead and roosted t he pack. Dan Steele rid ing for Top Shelf Restau rants held down the second position with Suzuki rider Bob Elliot righ t behind a nd Chris Chaffee moving up. After a few laps Rhyan Warren Reid flew to t hird bike and first 125 in the combined Pro claMS at SSM. retired with a bad plug wire and Steele took over while Chaffee had moved into the second position. Steele stretched out a good lead as Chaffee was slowly losing ground to Elliot. Within a few more laps Elliot got by Chaffee and at the finish it was Steele, Elliot and Chaffee. In the second moto Lynn Vick (Mai) got the holeshot with Elliot, Steele and Chaffee right behind. Elliot moved up and pulled away to an easy win while Steele finished second with Chaffee third. In the 125 Pro class FMF rider Gregg Toyama took his Suzuki around the first tum and just fried it leaving the pack in his wake. Back in the pack it was Suzuki of Lemon Grove rider Don Fuller and Escondido Suzuki rider Scott Anderson and Factory Suzuki rider Jeff. Jennings . Toyama went down off a small jump and was hit by another passing rider who totaled Toyama's rear shock and DNFing him for that moto. Jennings moved into the lead with Anderson right behind. Willie Amaradio (Yam) moved into the third position. Anderson could not hang: on to Jennings who was cooking but m the last laps slowed up with engine problems. Howeve r , he still took the win with Anderson and Amarado behind. In the second moto it was again the FMF rider Toyama , with new shocks, taking th e holeshot. Don Fuller took the lead for a few laps but Toyama got by and mo ved out, Fuller held down the second position. Jennings' engine was finished after a : few laps and DNFed. Anderson was right behind Fuller a nd in the last laps moved past to fill the second psot ion.
