CA .JULY 23 The two oldest bikes in the field battled for 25 laps before Gary Scott, who led all the way, crossed the line first to win the American Motorcyclist Assn. (AMA) Grand National/Camel Pro Series TT at Ascot Park. The win was th e second for Scott aboard th e nine-year-old Triumph . this year sponsored by stuntman Evel Knievel. It was also the fourth straight win for Scott in the annual TT. No other rider has won four straight annual ev ents in AMA Grand National competition. Harley-Davidson factory riders Ted Boody (141) and Jay Springsteen (139) regained the lead in the Camel Pro series when the battery broke on Kenny Robe rts' factory Yamaha . ' Roberts now has 136 points; Scott ha s 105. Roberts ha d led by one point going into the race and received a $8.000 check for doing so before the ra ce. TIme Trials Ken ny Rob ert s was easily the fastest qu alifier. ru nning pas t t he clocks in 45 .57 seconds. John Hateley (jack Hateley Ent.l PJI Lub ricants Tri) was seco nd fastes t at 46. 17 despite p rim a ry chai n tro ub les during practice. Bood y and Scott wer e ne xt. then Castle Rock T T winner Rand y Skiver (Torco Oi l/Messler Perf. / KRW Tri) a nd Alex Jorgenson. who would conti nually challenge Scott in the National aboard his I fl-yea r-old BSA. • 8 Heat Races Steve Eklun d (Mario Zanotti Yam) jumped in front of the first heat . with Roberts running second and Skiver third. Roberts cha lle nged Eklund often in the turns before getting by entering the infield on the last lap. The second heat had an assortment of leaders. as firstCorky Keener (AMF Harley-Davidson). then Mike Kidd (Mert Lawwill H-D) led before John H a teley took over . Jorgenson passed Ha teley three laps from the finish and set the fastest time of the heats. 7:46 .71. R ick Hocking. newly mounted on the Shell R acing Specia lt ies Yamaha . took the last transfe r to the main . La rry Legarra (Tri) holeshot the third hea t. only to crash in the infield. Jay S p r i ng stee n . who had been running third . moved into the lead , with Da ve Aldana (Tri) seco nd. Boody third and Brad H urst (Tri) fourth. Boody soon moved into second a nd cha llenged Sp ringsteen severa l times" O n th e last la p .
