Dennis and Bruce Penhall swapped the lead back and forth as Brad Oxley and Bob Schwartz battled for third . Sigalos and Penhall were side -by-side coming out of the last tum. and Bruce went just wide enough to let Dennis slip inside. A drag race to the finish line went . to Sigalas. Schwartz took third and 17-year-old Brad Oxley took the wrap up spot. Don Faulkner, one of the younger riders getting his big chance in the First Division , picked up his second win in the Handicap Ma in Event at Ventura . Rook ie Bob McLain pushed Don all five laps , but never got the break he needed as Don had a good line to the winners' circle. The Fea ture Match Race went to Gene Woods over Bruce Penhall . Woods is riding with a badly swollen heel . the afterma th of his crash last Friday night at Costa Mesa. . Rounding out a fine night of racing, John Sandona took the Division Two Handicap Main Event and now is the ' winningest second Division rider around. JULY 22 With all the fun and glitter of the Orange County Fair going on in the background, the Speedway show ~ot down to some very senous racmg. Dubb Ferrell had just won the Handicap Ma in Event and was hoping to add his name to the list of riders who have won both mains in the same night, but it was not to be . In the first lap of the Scratch Main , Dubb went way too wide , got a little too much traction and went straight into the crash wall , breaking his left leg at the knee . At this time there is no word on just how long he will be out of action. Later in the evening, wins did come in pairs for Mark Cherry. First he took the Feature Match Race over Dave Sims and then the big money race of the night, the Scratch Ma in Event . This Friday night, July 29. will be the final chance for the Americans to earn a shot at the qualifying rounds in England for the upcoming World Speedway Finals. It will be the first time in two years th at all three U .S . Speedwa y Champions will be at Costa Mesa. Steve Bast , Rick Woods and current Champ Mike Bast will all be out to to the four-lap feature last Thursday night. After an unusual series of events , the former desert champion scored his first scratch top prize of the year at the San Gabriel Valley racing complex . Fishback, riding a reworked Neil Street four -valve machine, was joined in the lineup by the Irwindale flyer Gene Woods , Dubb Ferrell, and the "Comeback Kid " Dave Sims. The starting lineup was Woods, always an outside rider , on the pole with Fishback second, Sims , riding the only 19·inch tire in the field , in the third spot. and "Dangerous Dubb" on the outside. At the stan, Woods jumped to the lead and immediately cut across the track to the outside line . As the pack moved down the back straightaway, Ferrell pinched off Woods at the wall and pushed Gene back to fourth . At the end of the first lap, Sims barely led Fishback with Ferrell and Woods closing in . The battle for the top spot continued throughout the second lap, as Sims and Fishback began a bumping contest coming off the comers. On the third lap , as the riders entered the first turn , Ferrell attempted to sl ide underneath Fishback for second, but " Big Jim" held his ground and Dubb slid out. Seconds later, Sims hit some added traction and went straight for the crashwall. Fishback then had the lead and Woods was chasing him. In another lap and half, Woods closed the gap on the outside, but it was Fishback for the victory . Gene had to settle for second, while Sims was awarded third and Ferrell fourth . Only .Mark Cherry kept Fishback from scoring a double last Thursday night, as the Reseda racer held off a late race challenge from Jim to capture the five-lap Handicap Main Event. Cherry, back on his own machine after tha t wild incident the previous week on Mike Bast's bike , moved through the pack nicely on the inside to claim his first Irwindale feature in several months. Following Mark and Jim in the ma in were young Bob McLain , Craig Schaefer, Kelly Moran and Bruce Penhall who never started due to a blown engine. In the two-lap Match Race, Ferrell and Woods put on a tremendous battle all the way with Dubb finally inching Gene at the checkered flag. Newcomer Leni Faas collected the Main Event victory in the Second Division fina le, while Phil Gagnon took the top honors in the Third Division feature . Results SCRATCH MAIN EVENT: 1.
