'Cal Rayborn Memorial by a straightaway By Dale Brown CHULA VISTA, CA ,JULY24 "W e couldn't have kept going that way." said Gary Scott after winning the fourth annual Cal Rayborn Memorial half mile at South Bay Park I 17 Speedway by a straightaway's length over Art Fredenburgh. What Scott referred to was a battle with Kenny Roberts . Both were ru nn ing far ahead of the pack, with Roberts (Yamaha Motors Yam ) in th e lead. Kenny's rear tire, a softcompound Goodyear , started chunking. After a couple of scary slides, Roberts parked the machine, enabling Scott (E veI Knievel Spl.lBoge·Mulholland H ·D) to slow down and fin ish the race, which he did on a bald tire . Roberts and Scott were the on ly na tional stars in the Exp ert Ma in after Rick Hocking, winner of the past th ree races . blew his engine on the last lap of the heat race. Behind the Roberts-Scott duel were Art Fredenburgh (Shell Racing Yam ), Steve Fortune (Sandak Raci ng H ·D ) and Vince Mead (H -D) in clos e form ation . In what must rank as one of the great holeshots of the year. he went from the third row to the lead in the third turn . : Craig Robinson (Yam) ran second all the way, .keeping in front of Eddie Lawson (T&D Yam ). Lawson tried several times to go around Robinson, but there was onl y one line through the groove . and Lawson's outside attem pts on ly lost time . Northern Californians Don Bailey (Yam) and Rod Spencer (Yam) fin ished fourth and fifth . Wayne Rainey's Novice win streak came to an end courtesy of Kim Jorgenson. Jorgenson led the first lap. but Rainey (Yam) slipped by going int o turn one. The duo ran away from the rest of the pack, but not from each other. With two "laps to go, Jorgenson (C-A) slipped past to take the lead in the same place where Rainey had (Continu~~0!l page ~O) HI-POINT RACING GRIP S HI-POINT FORK BOOTS PROTECTIVE EQUIPM ENT HI-POINT GEA R BAG tn r ip stop nylon, Itlla gMr ~ will hold Made of special non-slip rubber in the popula , watne pattern.
