I {Continue d from page 9}' the top nine. Cas tle Rock winner Skiver was nearly last and without brakes. Boody soon moved up and joined the fray, passing Bostrom and Hateley to trail teammate Springsteen. By th e halfway point in the race , Scott and Jorgenson had moved the battle away from Roberts , who was well ahead of Springsteen. Bostrom had dropped out. On the 15th lap , Roberts' engi n e cut out after th e big jump and Spri ngsteen moved up and passed leaving the infield , Three laps later, Roberts was out with a broken battery. Scott's rear tire was wearing out quickly , ca lling for a change of strategy. "1 rode so that no one co u ld get u ndernea th me," said Scott later. "The bike was sliding a lot ." Using the outside cushion as much as possible , Scott stayed in the lead, though Jorgenson nearly got by in the t urn before the jump. . Though the shift shaft broke on the 15th lap and Bood y was stuck in third gear , he was still out to pass his teammate. "1 was trying too h ar d to pass Jay , and 1 lost it. " said Boody of the crash that dropped him behind Hocking, Eklund and Goss. . Springsteen also went down in the closing stages of the race . Going through a tight left-bander that led out of th e infield , he lost it. "1 got into some of that deep stuff and (gesturing) lost th e front en d," Springsteen sa id . His me chanic , Bill' Werner. ran over and helped him get going again , but not before Hateley had gotten past. Sponsor Evel Kni evel was on hand for th e winner's 'ci rcle ceremonies, where Scott was congratulated for his th ird Grand National win of the yea r . Jorgenson was second , just as he had done at th e Astrodome IT. The winner of the Astrodome TT:" Hateley, was third, followed by Spri ngsteen , Hocking, Eklu nd , Goss, Bo od y, Aksland and Foster. Roberts , who wound up with one National point for 14th place, said after the race that he would be seeing a doctor on Monday, July 25, " I' ve been sick ever sin ce I got back from Europe. I was sick in bed this week and the week before . . . . I h ad trouble brea thing tonight. " • ·0 EB.
