VOLUME 57 ISSUE 25 JUNE 23, 2020 P51 ROOKIES OF THE YEAR On Wednesday, Martin Davalos was presented with the Supercross Rookie of the Year Award in the 450SX class. Davalos is actually a veteran racer but this was his first full-time effort in the premier class. Davalos, on the Monster Energy/Team Tedder KTM, was often found battling up front. His best finish was a fifth at the Atlanta Supercross. He finished out the season in 13 th . Geico Honda's Joe Shimoda was given the Supercross Rookie of the Year Award in the 250SX class. Shimoda finished out the season third in the 250SX East Championship. NO COLT Colt Nichols was hoping to help out his fellow Monster Energy/Star Racing teammates Sunday but suffered a wrist injury during morning qualifying. "The day was going well and then I got together with Chase [Sexton] in the heat race," he said. "I just misjudged how close he actually was to me and he was already committed to what he was doing. He ended up landing on my hand and got me a little beat up. I'm going to get it checked out and hope- fully will be all good." SCOTT BURTNESS The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna team racers mentioned after the race they were dedicating their all-Husqvarna podium to fallen crew member Scott Burtness. Burtness was Husqvarna's event special- ist, and was fatally injured in a crash while riding his adventure bike on Saturday morning. He was 32 years old. Osborne, Anderson and Wilson held up a "Sweep 4 Burtness" pit board on the podium as a tribute. Briefly... Cooper Webb (1) won all three Wednesday races at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Mathematically, Webb was still in title contention going into the final round Sunday but realistically it wasn't looking good for the defending champ. He had to win Sunday to have even a slight chance to retain the number-one plate but that chance disappeared when he got a bad jump off the starting line and tangled with another rider and went down in the first turn. Webb, however, fought till the end and was rewarded with second in the championship after a strong push in the final seven-round stretch in Utah. PHOTO: SIMON CUDBY
