I have known this man for 13 years. He has never raced or owned a larger dirt bike than his 125, He does not cheat and wouldn't, There are rules concerning protests in the ' AMA . When someone can protest another rider without the rider even knowing about it until the results are printed, something is wrong, I think a published apology in Cycle News is called for f rom Viewfinders, as well as som e action from D-37 to stop this from happening again. We are well aware of the national scandal which was entirely caused by our club's deficiencies, our lack of perfect foresight, including the prediction of tha t spectacular deluge with which the local farmers wer e blessed in a drought yea r. The details do not need Larry Cross' embroidery (Voices, Cycle News issue #27 ). Of the about 250 riders (not 400 ) who started, 39 fini shed (one was disqualified) . I don't know just how many of these (he states 30) made it to the second check since all ways of arriving at the second loop, including . the illegal one of riding backward on the course, were accepted due to the confusion , Riders were not told of a "large mud lake" at riders' meeting because ·no one, rider or club member, had been to the clay flats after the Saturday afternoon and evening rains and soon enough before the race to do anything a bout it including report back - the fatal error. The Bees' helicopter removed about 50 bikes on Wednesday. Due to the impassible conditions only a trickle left between then and when the club quit 'I:orking at four in the morning Monday. According to Mr. Cross' reckoning, therefore, almost 100 b ikes were rescued between the latter time 7:00 p.m, Sunday night, mostly by the club that did not care, If Mr. Cross cares to find out the facts about Cherry Creek to the best of my knowledge as one who was there before, during and after the race and talked to many club members and riders afterward , I refer him to 'Cycle News of June 1. Utah riders' complaint that they ha ve to race Cherry Creek for their points is justified, Perhaps Idaho rider Cross will from now on spend more time in Idaho and Nevada and less in Utah.
