FARLEIGH CASTLE, WILTS . ENGLAND,JULY 3 Honda works rider Brad Lackey of Concord, California won his first Grand Prix after five years of competing in 500cc World Championship MX. Lackey took the start and fought battles with two-time World Champion Bengt Aberg and last yea r' s • 36 runner up in the 500 cc Ch ampionship . Gerrit Wolsink, to post a first race win and then followed it up in the second rac e with a fourth place to score the overall win . After Brad's third overall in the United States and a secon d overall in the Canadian round he returned to Europe with one thing on his m ind: to win the Br it ish Grand Prix. He didn't fall short of his goa l. The racing took place outside the town of Wilts and was organized by the West Wilts Motor Club and spon sored by Champion Spark Plug Europe. T he Farleigh Castle, perched on the hillside, looks down upon a cir cuit that is a combination of slippery grass. hard ground , deep ruts . a stream crossing that turned into an axle deep rnudhole a nd a steep uphill section wit h three steps that shot riders into the air and tried to buck them off. Lackey wasted no time in making his pre-race p lans a reality as he rocketed h is Steve Whitelock -tuned RC400 works Honda into the lead going int o the first right hand tu rn fro m the grassy sta rt ing area . Br ad set his Honda a little wid e for the seco nd corn er and Graham Noyce slip ped in on the inside cu tt ing Br ad off with his Ro y Read -tuned 440 cc Mai co using a new cylinder a nd an added secti on on th e co ne of his Wheelsm ith p ipe . Following Graham through the hole at the second co rn e r were Bob Wright's CCM and Bengt Aberg on the 500cc four-stroke Yamaha . Wright got by Noyce. and as they came around to complete lap one it was Wright out a head followed by No yce , Aberg a nd La ckey. Both Mikk ol a and DeCoster had gotten bad sta rts, and on the first lap Roger's 385cc Suzuki ca used him to crash when th e throttle stuck wide open. He got it going again and made it to the pits to get the bike stra ightened out losing about 10 - seconds and putting him in last place. Defloster's luck didn't favor him at all, and he suffered a high speed crash on a steep downhill , both brakes on full lock and the engine screaming away with the throttle stuck agai n four laps from the finish , Heikki 's own crash broke the front brake lever. He tried to continue and managed to work his way u p to 12th place but without the front brake it was impossibl e to rid e . He crashed agaon on lap 14 an d wisely retired .
