IT175D INSIDE I am one of the thousands who own the new Yamaha IT1750 and love everything about it except for the speedometer. I have been trying to . find out what Yamaha is doing to do about it. I have asked my local Yamaha dealer and I even wrote a letter to Yamaha Motors in Buen a Park but didn't get an answer. Can you help me find out? Superbowl Contrite apology I attended the Superbow l of Motocross held at the Los Angeles Coliseum on July 9. I must say that I enjoyed the new race format (heats , semis and one main) a nd the races themselves. Too bad they were overshadowed by greed and commercialism. By thi s I mean , why add dangerous obstacles to the track to have a few more wrecks? That small second jump after the "Ski Run Jump" served no purpose but to c rash unsuspecting riders in practice and a couple more later in the evening. Someone finall y wised up and moved the second jump on 'the front straightaway only after a few riders ate it hard after hitting that idiotic suicide jump. Too bad it was even placed there in the first place. If it hadn't been there, that one bike probabl y would not have flown into the stands and landed on an innocent spectator, sending him to the hospital. Another shock came on page 13 of the program. I couldn't believe that th e winner of the largest single-day motorcycle event in the nation won a whopping $3,380 . I ,bet (promoter Mike) Goodwin had to sell one of his exotic cars to dish out that kind of prize money . With an average cost to see the race being $10, and at least 50,000 people attending, the winner's share of the $500,000 gate is $3,380. Goodwin should spend less tim e . spear fishing in the Honduras and start thinking more about the stars of the show , the racers themselves. TONY STEWART Bakersfield , CA The prize money for th e Superbotol of Motocross was posted by the American Honda Motor Co., In c. Non e of the purse money came out of t.he gat e receipts of th e even t , iohich. was attended by 59 ,800 people. While expenses and overhead at th e Col iseum and high, and while attendance was slightly down from 1976, Goodwin did not lose money on this year's race . . . Ed . T hree SUN M.C . members ha d trophies coming from the long-past Invader's GP. Du e to a m ultitude of mix -ups , legal hassles , etc. the Invaders M. C . was unable to ship the trophies to Phoenix. Thanks to the continuing efforts of the Invad ers and Big John in particular (World's Largest Invader) we got 'em today. Via UPS , perfect condition , wellpacked, etc. Take this as a great big "T ha nks" to the Invaders M .C . for all the trouble and we're sorry for the nasty letters to Cycle News . See ya' at the next 0 -37 GP. A. H . TELLIER E. A. NEMECEK REX HARELSON PAUL PROTO SUNM .C. Phoenix , AZ I want fame After reading your June 29, 1977 ( Cycle News issue #25) edition , I must say that I was quite disappointed in your paper. This marks twice that you have ei ther misprinted or left out m y name, at Fremont, Calif. a nd West Sa lem , Ohio, where two big cycle races occurred. In West Salem I won 'Pro Comp, setting a new miles per hour record at 146 .80 . My best elapsed time was 9 .25m almost 2.5 tenths quicker than anyone else in my class . I th ink that anyone winning a pro class and setting a record should at least be mentioned in a sentence or two . MTC and I went to a lot of pains to win that race. How about it? What's a gu y gOlla do to get some ink? I may never win again . DON HEMSLEY Las Vegas, NV Take the trouble to seek out th e reporter on the scene and talk to him. You may even get quoted. Publicity often blesses he who seeks it . . . Ed. I was very happy to read about Brad L ackey winning his first-ever 500 World Championship motocross GP. I feel that it was a great enough victory to deserve front -page billings - an American has finally won a 500 G P. Keep on gassin' it , Brad . KI M PALMER Red la nds, CA The f ront page had already been made up and sent to the printer when we got t he news. However, Dave Hawkins was on a plane for Northern California to interview Brad the following morning. The in-depth feat ure on America 's first 500 GP winner will run next week . . .Ed . Averting tragedy Having just read Terri Emery's "on motocross tragedy," I think I might have come up with an answer. to the problem. It will cost a few more bucks but in th e long run it could be dirt. cheap. .. What you do is have the regular ribbon around the outside and inside ,of the track. Then put another strand. or two of ribbon about four feet outside the other regular strand. This would provide a buffer zone] between the track and the spectators, l RO BBY JONES.) Northridge, CA .') CRC tenderfoot ::> 1 Com p liments must go to CRC for putting on such a super family endurozr The Tenderfoot , June 12 , at California City was one of the best enduros we have ever attended . It was very well planned. The first loop was laid out very nicely . It was a challenge to us women, but not "too" hard. The men also, felt the second loop was challenging, but fun . It 's nice to race, with a club that's got it together and is truly family orientated. Hats off to CRC for having a real enjoyable Family Enduro , that most of us will remember for sometime.
