AdYntwns rain a nd cin:u1ation mfonnatioo will be Imt upon _ . SftS.R .D .S. I'm writing to Cycle News to make known a slight mishap that happened at Saddleback Pa rk on june 5 , at the Continental Moto-Sport Club's (CMC) $ 1,000 purse event. The race attracted over 200 riders. The mishap took place after the third race of the day. CMC was 'raci ng a new layout using the new course a nd a portion of the old. The section that ran on the old track was cut out and a slick off camber put in its place. The worst part was that the change took over 30 minutes to com p lete . Another effort was taken to fix the new section but the a rea lacked prepa ration -:- a nother delay of the racing, Saddl eback sa id th a t they changed the - section beca use about a dozen riders wa nted . to ride on the other track. I feel this was a poor choice because we, the racers pay far more money than the few who wanted to practice on the other track. I think Sa ddleback should stop taking advantage of the racers because they keep the park open. ART McC LAIN CMC #23A R ich Kimble, manager of Saddle back, agrees that the racers pay a large part of the revenue. ' However, when the course was laid out by CMC officials. park construction guidelines were overstepped. That was the reason for the delay. Saddleback has advertised' that there are two tracks available and that on e can be used for the general public where the other is in race use. Because of the new CMC layout, t his became impossible, It was a principle of honesty t hat forced Saddle back to mak e the changes. A ccording to Kimb le, Saddleback appreciates th e racers very much, but can n ot let anyone else run th e park or alter advertised features without park permission .. . Ed. Sportsmanship at the U.S. GP Having just returned from the Hang Ten/Bel Ray Grand Prix, I'd like to share some observations. As diverse as brand and rider preferences were, there was a tremendous feeling of pride in what jim Pom e roy accomplished in the first rnoto . Cliches aside, he is indeed the first American. Another American also deserves more credit than the moto-journalists will likely give him. Sitting on the long uphill , we witnessed the demise of his , bike fi rst-hand . When Gary jones removed h is helmet, we saw t h e embodiment of the true co mpetitive spirit. T ho ugh running at th e back of t he pack, it was obvious he ha d given his- all. In spite of his frustration and disa ppo intment , he responded to th e crowd in a m anne r becomin g the ch ampion he was and sti ll is. Alt hough I've neve r met him , I'd like to t hank Ga ry for resto ring my faith in the human spirt. BOB RIDGW AY Skyway Recreationa l Pro ducts Red d ing , CN '-M ore thanks I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Marge of Clean Swee p , and her crew, for picking me up at the DR A desert race onjune 19. I crashed very heavily and couldn't walk . Without Marge I don't know what I would have done. SANDY NITZ Los Angeles, CA Laudig; (wh o works a job like everybody else), cove rs an even t, waits for results , types th e st ory en TOute home in his motorhome as his wife drives, and th en hits it on over to the Greyhound Bus station in Palmdale, near his home in Littlerock . If all go es according to plan, th e article and raw film arrive in th e . L ong B each Greyhound station early enough for Cycle News staffers to pick it up, g et the film developed and the story edited and typeset in time for th e 4:00 p. m . pr ess time. Timing is critical. The Desert Squirrels /San Gabriel Valley M. C. Dual European coverage missed the bus out of Palm dale. The B uzzards M . C. Hare Scrambles was mishan d led by Greyhound and did n 't arrive in time . B oth are in t his issue , , , Ed . Government cooperation 7 Government cooperation does exist! We of t he Nort h Mississippi End uro Team Inc , wou ld like to inform you r readers that we have found that the V.S .D.A. Forest Service is more than willing to help organized clubs promote an enduro on National Forest La nd . By working with Mr. Roy Smith and Mr.john Granger of the Holly Springs National Forest , we will be allowed to utilize a recreational area for camping and to ride some of the most beautiful forests that you have ever seen. This course through rolling hills with fast woods trails connecting interesting logging ' roads whi le passi ng three spectator points wit hin wa lking distance of the cam pgro und will provide one of the best events you co u ld ride this year. We realize the extra -work this event p uts on the Forest Service em p loyees a nd we of the Nort h Mississippi End uro Team In c . wo ul d like to express our appreciation. Alt hough t here is a co nsidera ble amount of pa per work , a ny club whic h is consideri ng sponsoring an eve nt in a Na tional Forest will find tha t it can be done and it is well worth the effort. T he government red tape is not insurmountable and you will be greeted with much cooperation. If you would like to see how your National Forests and much hard work can give you one of the most enjoyable rides you have ever experienced, come r id e our en duro near O xford , Mississippi on August 14, 1977.
