Brad dropped out after he crashed on lap four while in 24th place. Bengt Aberg retired when his front fender came off in a crash and after having to remove his goggles from all the mud and dust he couldn't see at all . Fellow Swede Hakan Andersson retired when his clutch retain ing nut came loose and the clutch kept slipping. Arne Lindfors crashed into a fallen rider at the top of one of the steep hills and he was forced to stop. The only Swede to finish was Ake Jonsson, bringing his Maico home in 17th place. Van Velthoven luckily finished 10th with a carburetor blubbering from ' a too-rich mixture .. Pierre Karsmakers finished out of the points in 16th place with a dragging front brake as a result of a ro ck kinking it early in the race. Wolsink's good start was the result of being totally prepared. He asked the organizers about the starting procedure since there would be no practice start and no other race to watch. Gerrit came to the line in gear and left it in, watching the gate the whole ' time . Heikki was in gear but watching as the ot he r riders filled in behind the gate. He was in a relaxed position when the gate dropped as all the riders weren't on the line! Roger, Brad and many of the top riders were caught unaware also . After the first race Wolsink was three . points from taking second place away from teammate DeCoster, 106 to 109. Roger never let Gerrit close that gap. He hit the gate perfectly when th e second race got under way, made it to the first corner and stretched his lead to take the checkered flag 27 seconds ahead of second place man who was , you guessed it , Mikkola who took 12 more points to add to his total. Heikki's second place didn't cOlJ1e without a little exc itement. He was third in the first lap behind Forni. Aberg was in fourth and passed Mikkola on the second lap , but Heikki got him back again on the third. It was. Heikki and Bengt the whole way until the last lap when Heikki got his foot' caught between the rear wheel and fender and was forced to stop to get it out. Aberg passed the helpless Mikkola but didn't realize that Heikki's problems were minor. Heikki remounted, caught and passed Bengt before the flag to take second away from _ the former double World Champion by .9 seconds and collect 12 points instead of 10. Wolsink had got,ten another good start , this time in seventh after one lap, and moved Weil on the second lap" past Forni on lap nine and finished nine seconds behind Aberg: Weil and Banks had a terrific battle going that went from lap four , when John moved in behind Adolf after passing Swede Hakan Andersson, until lap 10 when Big John gunned his fourstroke ahead of the ageless Maico Meister and stretched his lead to 10 seconds at the flag . . Brad started poorly again in 22nd place, worked his way up ' t o 13tfi .on lap five but exhaustion and his medical problems dropped him down to 24th on lap eight and he retired , . thoroughly depressed ' and knowing that he had lost much'ground to Gerrit in the standings. Heikki was the overall winner with his 1-2 score but this time it was Roger who was second with his 4,1, his second moto win for the season. Gerrit's 2-4 for the day was good for third. • • POMEROY TAKES FIRST MOTO AT U.S. GRAND PRIX Another historic first for Jim Jim Pomeroy - the first American to win a Grand Prix race (Spain, 250cc, 1973) became the first American to win a U.S. Grand Prix moto at the June 19 Carlsbad Grand Prix.
