That made m e feel good , but I still di d n't kn ow how it would work ' o ut when we wer e racing . W e jus t had to wa it until tim e tr ia ls to qual ify . W e ll , qua lification turned out to be th e d isaster! As I made m y warm-up lap and wa s co mi ng onto " t h e front stra ig h ta way for th e t im ed la p , everyt hing was jus t runnin g su per , but when I went past the st arter , I heard an awful noise in th e engin e . I pulled th e clutch in right aw ay and checked to see if I had b own a spa r k plug, J which I had not, a nd I just coasted o n into th e pits to find that I had ' b lown the head gasket on both sides, which was ca used by a stu d bolt in th e cylinder head st rip pi ng its th reads. After a ll t he ti me a nd effort o n everybody's part , I really felt bummed ou t that we di dn't ge t to run in th e Mile after bein g invi ted . There was no wa y we co uld put th e bike ba ck together aga in because th ey only a llow ju niors one time trial with no wav eoffs, m eaning that I co u ld n't go ou t a nd ti me tria l agai n o n anot he r m ot orcycl e , eve n if we had had o ur back-up bike there. I guess that made a lot of people ha ppy because we really wer e running goo d , and I think that the next time we get a cha nce, we will be able to p ro ve th a t we ca n do wellon a m ile track . I en joyed watch ing the races as much as anyon e in m y position could, kn owing they shou ld be out there, but boy, those experts really do sm oke! Their eq uip ment really seems to be top flight and they all ride hard the whole race - always passing even when there doesn 't look like there is room .
