(Con tinued from page 19) should .know enough to stay off the track , Each Saturday before race day, we spend hours putting up stakes and ribbon clearly marking our track , The spectators don't look , listen or get off anyway, What more can we do? Put more ribbon out? Ask the sound truck to ask the spectators to get off the track more times?_ Does any club or promoter have any ideas on how to beat this serious problem ? Riders , how would you feel if some fool on the track caused you to swerve and lose your place to that rider who had been eating your .d ust all during the race? How would you feel if you hit and killed or seriously injured a spectator on the track? What can we do? • Terri Emery, who told us "1 am worried not on ly fo r the dumb spectators, but also for both my brothers who ride, " helps run motocrosses at the Ma rysville, California track . . . Riding with "Fast Eddie" By Eddie Lawson . hat could have been my most exciting day of racing since winning Daytona earlier in the W year, turned out to be a complete . disaster! The San Jose Mile National was the first mile that I had ever ridden , and I had never even seen a mile track before, I was really j azzed because ABC-Bell had just presented me with a brand new set of the most beautiful leathers you have ever seen . and my tuner and sponsor had really knocked themselves out to put our mile bike in tip· top shape; I can honestly say that when I took my first practice laps. it was the fastest the 750 Yamaha had eve r run . We had it set up pretty much like we did for the half miles except that we' changed to the new short swinging arm that Shell Racing Specialties ca me out with for the Shell frames. This really makes it much more stable at all ti mes . My sponsor had picked up bot h the 'ha rd and soft Goodyear DT ·2 tires . which everybody is using for the mile, and we now have two complete sets of rear wheel changes on the four -inch rims. Boy. they really do stick when you run it into a turn! We had everything pretty much geared, jetted. and tuned right when we got there, It just felt so fast and even though it was longer than a half mile, it didn't feel that much different except that the telephone poles really did look like picket fences going down the back chute. I found that when I ran it into the comer at ' probably 120 to 125 'm iles per hour , I could actually throw it sideways and a lm ost ' d own immediately get back on the gas and . ho ld it wide open all the way through the turn in kind of a power slide unti l it cam e out on the straightaway and it just straightened ou t and kept right on goi ng . It was reall y fun because I could p ut my foot ba ck on the peg almos t at the same tim e I was turning the gas back on, which m eant it was just goi ng sideways at 90 or 100 all t he way through the , tu m - really a gasl The track had been und er water on ly three or fo ur days before , so it was a litt le bumpy and very sticky. but all in all it was one of the smoothest race tracks I have ever been on .
