(ContinuedfTom page 10) with Brae, but Danny was able to recover quickly enough this time to hold onto his fourth place. Glover had to remain satisfied with fifth ahead of Turner, Kessler , Richter, Ogden and Barnett. MotoTwo Newcomers grabbed the start of the second race as Californian Danny " MaGoo" Chandler on his D&G Suzuki got out in front of Illinois ' Mark Barnett and his C&B Honda of Crawfordville, Ind. , sponsored Suzuki . The two youngsters had nearly a 20 second lead over LaPorte as they started into the third lap, with Danny followed by David Taylor. Glover, Ogden. Dan Turner, Jones, Ron Turner , Kessler . then Hannah and Weinert. The pace finally got to Barnett and he bailed off hard. His teammates ran over from the mechanics' signaling' area to help get Mark running again, but Mark was quickly disqualified by AMA starter Carrol Chandler for receiving assistan ce outside the signaling area. "MaGoo" continued t o hold down his huge lead over La Porte even though his shifter lever had fallen off his bike and the transmission was stuck in third gearl La Porte had no way to know that Chandler couldn't shift, because for nearly five laps the MaGoo kid never lost an inch of ground. , "I was clutching it until the clutch finally went away ." Once he burned out his clutch, MaGoo was quickly caught by LaPorte. MaGoo tried to maintain his pace, but it only resulted in getoffs , "Chandler fell two times in front of me ," said Glover, who was easily able to slip into second spot. " I ' wasn' t pushing myself . Though the track was rough, I liked it. I hated it last year because I wasn't in shape. I had fallen and jammed my thumb in the first moto, but I just put the pain out of my mind and started going faster. " One lap after La Porte had taken the lead, a spectator darted across the track: in front of him, narrowly missing his bike but catching and damaging his front brake cable. Danny slowed and Broc blasted by to take over the lead. Meanwhile, Hannah and We inert had been battling their way up from 11 th spot the entire first half of the moto. Bob fell off once, Jimmy got by, but Bob was able to pass him back .again . The order at midpoint was Glover, LaPorte Hannah , We inert, Wise , Ogden, Warren Reid (who wasn't feeling too confident over the way his works RC Honda was han dling) , Pat Moroney and Ron Turner. Glover was cookin' fast enough on' his Yamaha that he couldn't be caught for the lead, but Laf'orte's problem with the front brake allowed Hannah to move right in and pass him . Danny didn't like that one bit, especially when he figured how many National points he might be losing . He dialed the throttle back up, repassed Hannah as the two of them began a running feud to the finish line. "The float level was still wrong in my carb for the second heat and the bike wasn't running right." said Hannah afterwards. "Danny passed me six times. He kept getting by in the turns. I decided to wait for the second to last lap before trying to go for it. " When Hannah started his charge to pull away from , La Porte near the, finish , Danny looked like he could stay with Bob, but then Danny's locking front brake caused him to crash hard on a rough set of back section whoop- dees. Danny remounted in time to hold onto his third place spot behind Yamaha teamsters Glover and Hannah, with Weinert in fourth spot ahead of Wise , Reid , Guerra , Richter and Moroney. . Hampered by slow starts, Pat Richter suffered a number of crashes each moto. The bike he was using was a non -watercooled Fox Suzuki which was considerably lighter and better handling then his watercooled bike , but the way Pat kept bailing off one could hardly tell . 250cc Support The Cheektowaga Flash. "Pent on's Frank Stacy . pulled out 2-1 moto pun· ches for victory in the Support class. Frankie's main opposition came from last week's Support class winner. AMA 1976 Amateur Champ Tad Perkins on a Yamaha. Frankie pulled the start in the opening :'lO-minute plus two lap moto ahead of Perkins. John Ayers, Mark Robillard and john Calathes. Perkins and Ayers seem content to run a steady pace as they let Robillard slip his Husky around them and into second spot for the first half of the moto. When the race reached its midpoint. Perkins started getting back on the gas to pass Robillard and reel in-on the small lead that Stacy had built up. Frankie looked like he could hold Perkins off, and did so for a number of laps , but then got out of shape on a rough section and between hops and swaps Perkins was able to slip past and pull out a 100 yard lead. Frankie got his Penton going faster and tried to recover the lost distance. but the moro would run out of time before he could. John Calathes from Orlando did an excellent job in ge~ting his Maico around both Ayers and Robillard for third spot. Stacy and Perkins renewed their battle in the second moto right out of th e gate. Perkins crashed and bloodied his face. With Perkins now out of contention, Frankie had an easy ride towards the fin ish and the da y's overall win . Second in the mo to went to Calarhes, ahead of Robill ard . A yers a nd Perk ins. • Results 125ce National 1. Bob Hannah 2. Brae Glover 3. Jim Weinert 4. Danny LaPorte 5..5teveWi.. 6. Gary Dgden 7.
