Schellenberger, Spencer double at Downs By Dave Nielsen FT, WORTH , TX , MAY 27 Friday night flat tracking rolled on at Ross Downs, highlighted by double wins turned in by Carter Yamaha's Roger Schellenberger in the 85cc and 100cc fin als, foll owed by com e-from- be h ind fir st place efforts of Freddie Spencer in 250 and Open action . Ir onically, Sp encer liad to ba t tle past th e same two riders in both classes to get those wins , finally setti ng up a nd passing Bub b a Shobert and W es Powell wit h littl e time to spa re . In the 250 Ma in , Powell (SUl ) and Shob ert (Bul) jum ped the pack and set the pa ce , wh ile Mik e Gree n 's b a nza i charge tow a rd th e leaders ended on th e grou nd in the fourth tu m of lap o ne. Powell had won th e Trophy Da sh e a rlie r and appeared settl ed int o another winning rate , but Fr eddie was gai ning grou nd from his eighth -place sta rt , a nd b y lap five had passed Shob ert for seco nd . Simultaneou sly, th e wh ite flag was out and Powell was out of the lead as Spen cer d rove h is 250 Astra by Wes and to th e checkers . MAY22 The powers t ha t are in all classes met head on today at Lake Whi tney cycle Ranch for the third and fina l go of this yea r' s "T exas Championship MX " series, and even th ough AMA ci rc ui t riders Stackable and Howerton d idn't run the $6 ,000 series , some 450 of T exas' best wer e WFO for state honors from Junior Mini to Open Expert : By the end of a hectic day of packed sta rt ing lines, j u m pi ng in the coo l Brazos River , a nd some truly electric ra cing. the cr eam of the respective crops emerged at the front of the p ack and up front in t he pa yoff and trophy Jines: Gatta tell ya about t he 125 Expert class . Forty-four riders, pumped to the gills . bik es ported to th e hilt. In an attempt to retain some sanity, the field was sp lit in two first mot os, ra n a co nsy, and th en a second m ota. Right off the bat in the "A" m ota , Da vey Jon es on his roc ket Honda loo ked like he would upset seri es con tende rs Mike J on es, Shaun Kelley , and Barry Dunca n , bu t a fter leading for six la ps, Mike J on es (H a n) and Kelley fina lly closed th e ga p on the younger J ones. who seemed to tire sligh tly towa rd the end of the ra ce and ended th ird ahead of Duncan. The " B" mota sa w a nothe r Ft. Worth area non-pro shoot ou t to an im mediate lead. It was th e stylish and fast Danny Doss (SUl) out front and pulling awa y from the pack that in clu ded Mel Newman , Glen Johnson , New Br aunfels' h otsh oe Da vid Daniels, and Big Spring's Danny W eir. Doss went untouched to the che cke rs, althou gh Newman did close in some during the eight -lap race . Th e Suzukis of Newman , Doss , Mike Brownlee, and Louis Presley led the 40 ·rider charge in th e final moto , and Newman appeared to lock int o a winning pa ce, but slipped down on lap three and Doss scooted by . At the halfway point , it was Doss, Newman , Mike Jon es, Duncan , and David Jones , but then Davey went down a nd finished ninth . J ust before takin g the whit e fla g , Newman took th e lead b ack from Doss to win th e mota , first on th e d ay, and edge Mike Jones by z w ~ w Z w g >- '" ~ o :I: Q. Blackwell leads Monte A nderson and Darrell Hollingshead at Whitney, four points for the Texas Series Championship. Shaun Kelley ca m e from last to l Sth at the finish , but still ended the series with th ird overall, just up on GlenJohnson and Dav id Daniel. Steve W ise was on hand during a break from the Nationals, and des pite a snarl ing 33 -rider pack led by Austin's Ricky Blackwell , Wise (SUl) con trolled the 250 Expert class for a fast $150 I -I sweep. The go ing was hot and hea vy from Blackwell (Yam) on ba ck , as Ba rry Duncan (C -A) and Glen J ohnson (SUl ) of Houston ended third 'a n d fourth. Combined with Rog er Brown's awful lu ck in the 250 ra ces, Glen J ohnson's po ints carried him to the series first overall ahead of Brown , Duncan. and Blackwell, Only 18 of the 30 Open Ex perts wer e able to fin ish the last m ot a , a nd some of them by that time were roll in g wounded from raci ng multiple classes on the demanding Whitney cou rse . First moto win ner Roger Brown and ' his Penton 400 disappeared on lap one of th e final , setting up a three man bout among Blackwell ( Ya m) , Monte Anderson ( Bu l), and Darrell Hollingshead (SUl ) of Dallas, who led the front rti nning trio until the penultimate lap when his air forks went flat. Rick Blackwell drove by Darrell and held off Anderson to win the class moto, overall , and the series first place money . On top of everything else . Blackwell is very easy to ta lk to and just may be the next rider of note to come out of the Texas MX hotbed . Another natural talent is emerging from the Intermediate ranks in the person of young Bruce Hallmark of Irving , Texas, who dominated today's races with four mota wins .a nd swept 43
