Cla ire was closing fast on Harper; on the inside heading into the esses, he got by. Heading into the sandwash, Harper took ' second back again; coming up out of the gully Claire grabs it back again. One lap later, Harper took it back again, putting Cla ire in third with a flat front tire. In the second moto, Harper again took over the lead . followed by McCoy and Claire. McCoy, closing fast on Harper, came up on the outside , through the sandwash loop and got by. . Claire also got by for second and they held their positions down to the wire. T he win went to McCoy. second overall to Claire and third to Harper. Dave Haugh watched the 250 Pros from the sidelines. Seems he'd been playing baseball at a party Saturday night and was hit with a baseball bat , req uiri ng several stitches. While Dave watched, Mark Lawrence (YamCrown Cycle) took the overall win . The first moto, Hal Strauss, cheered on by his seven -month-old son grabbed the lead and appeared to have the first moto win sewed u p . then his bike seized and he had to turn over the lead to Mike Shoemaker. In the second moto , Lawrence had the lead with Tracy Oswell running second and closing in fast on him , Finally Oswell got by with Shoemaker in p ursu it , By the end of the race, Lawrence took first overall, second went to Oswell and third to Shoemaker. It was Lawrence's d ay all the way . First he took the 250 Pros. then he ca m e bac k and won the 125 Pro class. In the first rnoto , Kir k Stu rgeon (SuzSuz of Pomona) took the led with Jerry Shore (Cole -Bros.) running second. Lawrence. in third, was closing in fast on Shore. Com ing u p out of the sa ndwas h , Lawrence moved into second and went to work on Sturgeon, Going into the sweeper turn, Lawrence got by Sturgeon and set up a beautiful lead. Heading into the sandwas h loop , Tim Locey was right on Shore's tail in a battle for third. Coming off the rabbit jumps, out in the sandwash and closing in fast , Locey made his move and passed Shore. Locey set out to pass Sturgeon and closed in fast . Andy Jannings had moved up through the pack to fourth. By now Sturgeon was fighting for his life. with less than half a bike's distance ahead of Locey , Com in g through the sandwash , Locey made his move and got by Sturgeon. heading after Lawrence. La wrence apparently in trouble, in front of the tower. waved Locey on by and finished the race, just trying to hold his position. Sh ore got by Sturgeon, who dropped out. By the end of the rnoto , J an nings had moved into fourth an d the ot her positions hel d. The second moto gave Lawrence the chance he 'd been waiting for , Taking over the lead he jumped into a big first place over Bob Kline in second and Ji m Hale in third, Locey then moved into third, Shore followed . Kline went out in the sandwash with a broken rod. Jannings was hustling. now in fourth and really cookingl Locey was right on Hale's tail every inch of the track. not more than one bike's length at any given moment, Locey finally got by and set out after Lawrence. Heading into the white flag lap Lawrence had a 12-second lead over Locey , When the checkered flag came out. Lawrence rode across to first overall, Locey scooped up second and third went to Jannings. • R esu lts in Results Section.
