Br ad was proving that th e Hon das had some serious horsepower as he j um ped into the lead on t he d ownhill. Smith seconded th e m ot ion as he moved int o seco nd until a fla t for ced him out of the ra ce. (The America ns are losing all fo r t he " Eu ro pea n re sp ec t domination .") After Marty dropped out DeC ost er m oved into second behind Brad. Roger look ed like a sure . ove r a ll winner. But Roger refused to sett le for seco nd when he needs all th e po int s he ca n ge t to keep his c; own . Brad 's lead was slim as he and Roger flew down the giant downhill. At the bottom of the hill Lackey was holding off DeC oster. T he two riders went up th e next little hill , made th e 180· turn , then ca me down the , little hill leading to the main grandstand area . Then disa ster st ru ck for Roger . La ckey fell and Roger was so close behi n d that the Suzuki rammed the d own ed Honda . Brad's rear fender was bent under and Roger retired with bent forks. After the spill Mikkola inherited the lead. In second place was Maico's Gaylon Mosier who , after fin ishing 10th in the first moto, was holding down a solid second place. After fa lling in the first turn Wolsink was bezerking it and fell again on the downhill while pressuring Gaylon for seco nd place . " I was go ing too fast down the big hill and he (Gay lon ) cu t me off. It wasn't his fau lt. My frori t tire hit his rear and I went over the b ars ," Gerrit said as he remembered th e seco nd fall in the m oto . True to his sta tement ea rlier in the d ay . Gerritt never ga ve u p . He remounted and began to reel in Mosier aga in . On t he wh ite flag lap it was Mikkola in a com fort a b le lead wit h Mosier secon d ahead of a .closing Wolsin k . Ga ylon felt the pressure of Wolsink an d slid out in on e of the now su n- h a rd en ed t u rns a nd Wo lsink slipped by for second place and wh a t later pro ved to be the ove rall. The finish of moto two was Mikk ola firs t, \Volsink seco nd , and Mosier third . T he top th ree were followed \ in by Brad La ckey, who rem ounted after the tangle with DeCoster and put in a fantastic ride to take a fourth that was go od en ough for thi rd overall. Schmitz was fifth followed closely by Cro ft th en DcStefa no . t hen Billy Grossi who put in a hot ride on the Open class Suzuk i. J a ak Van Velt hove n and Joh n Ba nks filled o ut the top 10 places. The top (A bov e leftl M ike Be ll took t he support class by storm . For th is ra ce , how ever , the Yamah a fact ory really wa nte d a vict ory a nd suppl ied Bell with a little ex tra effort . This might be viewed as ove r-kill. sin ce Bell has co nt ro lled a large p e r c en t a g e of th e P ro r a c es th roughout Ca lifo rn ia on a virtually stoc k b ike . Mike got off the line in the first moto in sevent h p lace a nd by th e end of th e first la p had m oved a ll th e wa y up to secon d beh ind Steve Rh yan (KT M) fro m San Cle mente . 6¥ the end of lap two th e race belo ng ed to Bell and no r ider c h allenged him for the rema inder of th e race. Rh yan finished seco nd with Scott Gillm an (Ya m) th ird . Pa rry Klassen (Ya m) and Bob Ell iot (Suz) ro u nded out th e to p five. In moto two Rh yan was on the gas and determi ned to take the second ra ce . Bu t Bell ha d other ideas and on the fou rt h la p again had t he lead . Bell never reli nq uished th e fro nt spot. R h van held close but co uldn 't really cha llenge the speed y Bell. In a great ride , La nce Moorewood got off t he line in last place and worked his wa y to 10th.
