The first moro lineu p included most of th e Open cla ss co ntend ers, includi ng Burleson , Messer , Br iggs , Carter , Fer o and local MX hero Ken Maahs. When Bu rleson found ou t a bo u t Gall o's rear wheel problem , he kn ew he had a n exce lle nt cha nce to ca p ture the overa ll. After a prac tic e lap around the cou rse , Dick d ecided 10 tape on a tearoff lens over his glasses. A m ud hole on th e ba ck side of th e track a long with th e kn owledge he would get a slow sta rt due 10 his hav ing 10 be off th e bike 10 kick it over p rob ably had a little b it 10 do with his decision. Dick swept past Ma ico riders Barry Briggs a nd Bob Messer , both very good m o tocrosscrs a nd set his sight on Chris Carter who was now leading . Ca rt er want ed the rnoto win bad but a failing rea r brake slowed hi m . sligh tly and Bu rleson swept by and into the lead before the end of t he firs t lap! He just was n't to be denied . Hannon was holding off a pressuring Crankc unt il a slower rider knocked Hannon down j ust before the finish and Cr a nke got by, Hannon got up and fini shed third , livid with rage. He thought th e slowe r rider . Penton mounted Tom Reese , was deliberately block ing for Cra nke an d Younkins. The collisi on turned OUt 10 be costly as Mike ended up third behind Cranke and Younkins, just two seco nds back of Younkins. Mike's teammate , Ben Bower. also had some terrible luck when his Bultaco foul ed a plug on the last lap , By th e time Ben changed th e plug, his gold m edal was long gone, Al Bak er , on an IT 400 Yamaha, had the m isfortune 10 crash in th e mud hole and was coated with mud from head 10 roe . Desert ace Terry Da vis was circ u la ting at a fai rly fast clip b ut did miss a berm now and th en , It looked like Bu rleson now had a lock on th e ove ra ll and cla ss win but Frank Gall o had a point to make, Frank limped into th e finish and lined up for his rnot o , When he was done, he had better ed Burleson 's mota tim e by two seco nds , broken rea r wheel and a ll! Bad lu ck d ep artm ent : La rs La rson (Ma i) - rea r sproc ket bolts shea red off 15 m iles fro m t he fin ish ; Kevin La Voie ( Pe n) - Mu ffler ca me a pa rt , engine would n't ru n ; Earl Law (Oss) - Flat tir es; Roy Cook ( Pen) - Rear shoc k m ounts brok e , still fin ished on silver.
