AMC's $1 ,000 purse drew some heavy competition in th e form of Gary Denton. Marty Miller. Gregg Toyama, Cliff Lett , Jeff Ward and Tim Lunde. All of these riders vied for the top spot , while Moorewood, who has built on his reputation in the minis , turned good starts into a 3·\ win , Marty Miller had a shot at the day's overall, but was pressured heavily by Moorewood into making a fatal triple endo down the new downhill section, Cliff Lett then became the man on the bubble because his first mota win would be enough to beat Moorewood's score if only he co uld slip by Tim Lunde into second place in the final mota , Moorewood took a clean win and Lett and Lunde dueled to the line ' with Lunde holding the upper hand and second overall cash by feet at the finish. Thirty-three riders lined up for the 250 Pro mota and the last man.around the first corner was Mike Bell. Despite a crash in the middle of th e mota , the amazing Bell finished second to Mike Gillman (Yam). Marty Miller took third and Gary Jones (AMMEX) fourth . Bell got a misera ble start in the second mota also , bu t set sail after leader Jones. The smooth riding Jones held the lead almost the whole way , until Bell slipped by in an uphill right to roost away for the 250 Pro win . Gillman was second overall with a \ -3 score, while Gary Jones went 4-2 for third . Miller and Rick Asch (KTM) diced for fourth with Miller grabbing the loot , although Asch passed Miller on the last lap for a 5-4 mota score. Bell won a boring Open Pro race with a clean sweep. Donnie Hansen went 2 -2 for second and Jon Derhammer (Man) was third with a 43. • Results in Results Section. White, Rhyan, Moore take pre-GP Carlsbad CMC MX By Patti Trotter CA RLSBAD , CA,JUNE \2 Fritz Schlegal (Mai) got out first as the gate went down to begin the 500 Pro race , Following Schlegal was Top Shelf rider Danny Stee le (Yam) , Moro-Meist er sponsored Dale Anderson (Mai) , Mark White (Hus), and another Top Shelf Yamaha rider Scott Montgomery. Jeff Vidic (Yam) and John Ormuth (Yam) rode the next places. Schlegal was the leader for three laps. Anderson then blasted by both Steele and Schlegal for the lead, Wayne Boyer (Yam) worked his way from the back of the action to fifth by the sixth lap . On lap seven he bumped Schlegal -back and took over fourth. Montgomery seized his machine coming off the downhill and retired . Anderson, Steele and White had full charge of the race and were far ahead of the other riders. Steele swooped by Anderson to capture the lead. White, one lap later, nailed Anderson for second. Vidic vaulted into the lead in the second mota. Boyer began his charge on the leader and as the duo were coming off the downhill Boyer blew by Vidic for the lead - one which he surrendered for only two la ps when White took over as parade master. Boyer re -took the lead for the eventual win. An derson was in third with Schlega l, Vidic and Steele in the next slots, Schlegal passed Anderson with Steele gett ing by Vidic. Chip Ho well moved into fifth wit h Vidi c a nd Anderson finishing the race behin d him. Payback went to White with the most consistent score, Boyer and Steele got the next best money , Dallas Baker Kawasaki rider Kevin R od g e r s ( KTM) came rocketing around the first turn ahead of the other riders to take the lead in the 250 Pros. Gerry Stewart (Yam) , Vidic and Steve Rhyan (KTM) were ahead of Doug Southward (Yam) . Vidic took the lead in the second lap as he and Rod gers came into the hairpin turn bar-to-bar. McKee's Cycle Parts pride and joy Rocky McKee moved into fifth behind Rhya n . This is one of the firs t race McKee has ridden since he crashed a while back and tweaked his shoulder and arm . Rhyan ripped a rou nd Rod gers (who was riding with a broken frame) for second. Next time around he took the lead but a throttle cable wrapped around a brake cable put him out of action for a few mi nutes; when he got going again he was in fifth. Boyer was now t he lea der wit h Steele second and Vidic and McKee next. Rhyan opened u p and started passing everything in sig ht. Whent he checkered went out he was only inches behind the lea der Boyer . In the second ro und Vidic and Tim Tolar came around the first turn together but by the end of the first lap Boyer was the leader. Vidic and Rhyan got a dice going, with R hya n and then Steele getting by Vidic. Rhya n took the lead away from Boyer and rode for the gold. Steele stayed right on his Metzeler for second. Boyer and Vidic finished next . When the race was finally over R hya n had a 15 second lead on the next rider, Steele. Mike Brown (Yam) grabbed the lead in the first 125 Pro mota. Terry Shekell (Yam) , DG rider John Tessitore, Mike Pillar (Suz) , Nelson Whitehill (Yam), Corki Moore (JT) and FMFs Malcolm McCassy were next. Shekell took over the lead and ran away with it . Tessitore rode in second with Brown forced back to third. Whitehill and Moore moved by Pillar, but Whitehill DNF'd , Shekell was off the line first in the second mota. Pillar and Tessitore were in hot pursuit with Whitehill and Moo re next. Shekell crashed in the sixth lap, giving Tessitore the lead. Pilla r got to second; Moore to t hird . Sh ek ell re -started and crashed again , . . he hung it up a nd went home. Pillar passed Tessitore on the sixth lap. Moore did the same. In the last la p Moo re blasted across the fini sh lin e ahead of the others to take the win and the overall. Pillar and Tessitore crossed nex t. • Resu lts in Results Section.
