Jackson , owner of J &J Cycle , Concord . was in second place until he ra n out of gas. The Marathon was rea lly-rough and the riders only completed 20 laps . The 100 class winning team was Mike Moyer and Tom Worth, takin g first on a Yamaha . They made a great effort and had the talent and endurance all the way . It was a challenge for many of the riders to just finish the race. Open class winner was Bo b Be lliei tt i, wh o has had a lot of experience riding marathons. The team of Steve Ferroni 'a n d Henry Leslie (SUl) were the overall winners in the 125 class . CA , MAY 14 Mile r fever struck the Lodi Cycle Bowl as 16 experts actually signed up for the King of the Hole race: Several othe rs wanted to ride, but safety di ctated a limita tio n of competitors and a three-row start. Many spectators looked to Row T wo where National Number 44, Alex Jorgensen, gleaned a n outside starting spot and hoped to p review good luck at San J ose the next day with a win. Jorgy had topped the 250 Experts earlier bu t such was not to be the case -i n this one. There were several crashes, .with one sending Alex over the bank and -into so me rather dumb spectators (riders and friends) who were waiting to go out for trophy presentations. No one was injured, luckily , and Manual Datan of Sa linas inherited the m oney. High finis hes sent Jeff H aney (500 win ner) , John Tavis (360 victor), an d Bria n Thompson (25 0 second) to fight it out next week for high point money , with the two Jorgy boys. Action continued furious in the 360 class where novice winner Kenny Burton (Burton , Cycle Gri ngo) grabbed his second win a nd junior man R afe Heath dialed the start and moved ahead of Burton by one in the high-point battle. Both of these Lodi M.C. members are not likely to be cheering for each other next week at the finale. 'After the final spring short track next week the Bowl will switch over to its traditional night scrambles season kicked off Memorial weekend wit h three races, including the II th Annual Archie Cla rk Memorial, this year a benefit for the California School for the Deaf. Scramb les will be interrupted on Saturd ay night, J uly 9, for a Nation al Sportsm a n and Mini Short T rac k Q u alifier . Top experts in ea ch class ma y qualify for the National Champ ionship in Kansas in August. Hersman tops 250s at Argyll By Sallee Hllton DIXON , CA , MAY 15 Bob Myers (Ma i) and Ted Rogers (KTM) fought it out 'for the first laps of the first Open T R· Expert moto before Myers got tired of taking turns leading and ;.oent out front. Parry Klassen (Yam) had been running third until he crashed and Tony Bouscal (Mai) took over th e spot. Myers and Rogers were wa y out front now and the interesting portion of the race was the contesting of third place, for Mike Preston (KT M) was gaining rapidly on Bo usc a l and Klassen was back in action gaining on .both of them . Klassen made it to third b y the fin ish , Bou sc a l got the fourth . Myers crashed early in the second moto , losing his lead to -Rogers. who took it all the way to the flag and the overall big bucks. Klassen pulled into second after Mike Miller (Mai) began slacking off the pace. Jerome Heiberger (SUl) diced it out with Miller and took third place from him. Klassen go t the second p lace cash, Myers was third overall, with Jeff Anselm o (Mai) and Jim Da lla ra (M ai) a lso cashing in . , Alt hough the day was typically (for Dixon ) windy, the tornado like winds kindly waited 'til after the last race to attack fu ll force, making it difficult to find the way out of the park. Some of the motos in the latter part of the p ro gram gave the riders a b it of a problem with wind . Tad Gumbmann (Mai) was dialed in to win 'the first 250 Expert moto . Off the stan it was Phil Crane (SUl) , Mark Hilton (SUl), Da vid Woodall (Bul) and Gumbmann who got around the first "S" turns before a six or eight bike pile-up slowed down the rest of the pack. By the end of the first la p the running order of those four riders had completely reversed and Gumbmann started stretching out his lead. Hilton chased Woodalland was right on his tail when Parry Klassen (Yam) moved into the scene and made a three way fight of it. The three riders were all in second place coming . down off the " Ma tter h orn" hill and down the straightaway into the turns. Going into th e sharp right turn at the end of the straight. Banzai style . not one of the riders would back off t he throttle and th e inevitab le crash p ut Hi lton out of the contest. Klassen held on for second. Klassen and Woodall later both dropped back and J er om e Heiberger (Mai) rook over fo r t h e seco n d fin ish with Mike Hersman (H us) taking third and Klassen fourth . Gumbmann and Hersman made a hot race of the second moto, both way ahead of third runner Donnie Cantaloupi (Yam) and the three way fight for fourth which was won by Hilton. Just before the white flag, Gumbmann pulled out wit lt mechanical trouble , and shortly afterwa rds Klassen got by Hilton for third and the fini sh order was established as Hersman , Cantaloupi , Klassen and Hilton. The money for overall went to Hersman , Cantaloupi , Klassen and Heiberger. Phil Crane (SUl) was really cookin' in the 125 class, win ning the first moto easi ly. He led a ll the seco nd m oto with Cantaloupi (who had finished second in the first ro u nd ) right behind him and p u sh in g . In t he final la p Cantaloupi m ade h is move and took over the lead to win th e overall as well as the moto, Crane was lost in the back of the' co urse a nd did not finish , Lance Lollar (SUl) took t he second and second overall cash, Rick Stadtmiller (SUl) , a new expert. got third place pay for his two fourth finishes .
