Santiam Spoke ~pinners Poker run an enduro By Action Oz LE BANON.OR ,.MAY22 If the powers that be ever need a club to train aspiring enduro riders , I'd like to nominate th e Santiarn Club. It was a neat run but it "wa rn't easy" . With 350 riders turning out for the event the already wet 30 miles got m uddyl . According to club president , T oni Boyd, the hard course was marked with an option al route which this rider thought meant easier - it d idn't , it meant harder than hard . So wha t did most of the hard course riders do they went for the suprem e test. On on e 300 -yard uphill there was a whole bunch of fis h trying togo upstream on slick. greasy, deep-vee- rutted terrain . At th e top of th is torture test were a whole passel of riders who decided to stop and smell the scenery. This would have be en O .K . and gone b y unacknowledged but a 62-year·old gentleman riding a 175cc Honda thumper came on up without stopping and he did it with trials tires. T his event was plenty tough and very p retty. At many points along th e way a rider could stop his bike , get off. walk around a nd enjoy a vast scenic view of a part of O regon that is rife with splendor. I full y bel ieve that part of the reason for the popularity of poke r runs is because you have the " beca use it's the re" syndrome as well as the ability to stop and enjo y the " beca use it's there" aspec t. The Spoke Spinners are a family type clu b and they are very concerned about the environment. At the riders m eeting , and printed on the la rge call out , cards by the sign up a rea , were requests to treat the flora and fauna with top consideration . This has to be continually stressed , lest we all lose the right to enjoy an event with such magnitude as this was . The club has 30 hard working members and they came up wit h 40 trophies and many other prizes such as tires, oi l, fenders, etc., do n a ted by th e area bike deal ers in a n d aroun d Le banon. As mentioned above. there was a rider aged 62 a nd there was also a little girl , three who rod e the event sitting on the tank of her dad's bike. The club was able to get permission from a large lumber concern to run its event over their private property and in Oregon everyone does his bit to preserve and still enjoy what we have , . • even pri vate industry .
