For the umpteenth time: Bell wins twoatCMCMX By Patti Trotter ORANGE, CA,JUN. 5 The 500 Pros had the first go at the track and as always, the hottest of the local riders, Mike Bell and his DG Yamaha took - 30 care of business in short order. Bell and Scott Gillman (Yam) were smoking. T .). Warren (Mon) Robert Marino (Yam) and Doug Sherman (Mai) held the front positions behind Bell and Gillman. As the laps checked off Sherman moved into fourth with Richee Collins (KTM) taking over his position. In moto two, Gillman grabbed the holeshot and ripped around the first turn for a lead that lasted for two laps . Bell took it away and took the overall win and $160 . Following Gillman was Marino, Ron Tebbs (Hus), Fritz Schlegal (Mai), Luke Messer (Mai) and Mike Loper (Yam). T .). Warren was way to the back of the pack. As the leaders were coming around on the fifth lap, Warren had moved to third . At the end of the inoto the top pointe went to Bell, Gillman, Warren , Morgan and Collins . Bassett Rocket Jim Gibson piloted' his machine to the head of the 250 Pro pack for a early lead in the first moto. Directly behind Gibson were Bell, and Mid -Valley Ossa rider Greg Robertson. Tim - Lunde (Yam) and Alan Smith (H us) stayed ah ead of Greg Stone (Yam) and Tim Welker (RM B). Smith bumped Lunde while Welker was working on moving int o fifth. Gibson and Bell were really "going for it" when Bell blasted by Gibson and took the win . Following Bell across the finish line were Gibson, Smith, Lunde, Welker and Mike McGowen (Hus). Bell dialed it on and took the lead in the second moto, riding flawlessly Gibson grabbed second and was in hot pursuit of Bell for the entire race . J im has a unique riding style - he is wide open all of the time. Wes Sutton (Mai) , Lunde , Welker, Smith, Miller and new pro rider Doug Southward (Yam) chased the leaders. Lunde pushed, Sutt~n b.a!=~ . to. fo. rth)n _the . u third lap. Smith inoved both Lunde and Sutton back two laps later and took command of third. Gibson runs away with-SSM 250 Pro race By Danny Raymond ORANGE, CA ;JUN. 4 Bassett's Jim Gibson flew his Yamaha to top honors during SSM's 250 Pro race: Jim ran away with both motos leading from start to finish throughout the entire day . Montesa's Jon Derhammer ran ru nner up to Gibson taking second overa ll with a comfortablelead. Gary Jones came from behind the first moto pack to pull up to th ird but failed to finish the secondmoto gIving third overall to Yamaha-mounted J eff Vidic, During the Open class competition Yamaha's Scott Gillman blasted his way through the first tum and opened up the first moto with the holeshot, D&G's Mike Bell and Montesa's T .). Warren made their way through the pack after Gillman. After some heavy dicing Bell made his way past Gillman to take over the lead. Soon after Gillman took a minor spill allowing Warren to take over the second spo t. Recovering from a small first turn tangle with T im Tolar, Mike Loper (D&G Yam ) wasted little time making his way back to fourth behind Gillman at the finish . Mike Bell smoked through the first turn with the first hlp lead that he stretched and was never pressured. Mike Loper followed Bell through the first tum but was picked off by Tim Tolar (Yam), Scott Miller (Mai ) and T.). Warren. Meanwhile after a slow start, Scott Gillman was bezerking his way th rough the pack making his way to second place after only six laps . Warren moved into third as Mike Loper was charging up on t he leaders. As the moto came to an end Husky mounted Chip Howell was quickly making ground on Loper bu t was unable to pass before the checkers . .lifOpped . _ Mike Baeder (Yam 1701 beat David Emde (Yam 251 and Harry Klinzmann (YamI in 250 GP at Ontario. FMF's Radical Ron Turner was back to his old stuff by winn ing the 125 Pro race. Turner has been out of competition for awhile with an injury to his ankle. Meanwhile D&G's Mike Tripes and Jim Dom ann were dicing for second throughout both motos . Domann beat Tripes du ring the first moto but the tides turned for the second moto as Tripes went on for second place. • Baeder wins 250 · GP again; Pridmore sets Production record at AFM RR ONTARIO , CA ,JUNE5 Mike Baeder again beat Harry Klinzrnann and-Da vid Emde in an American Federation of Motorcyclists 250 GP road race, this time at Ontario Motor Speedway. Baeder, who also won at Riverside on May 22, led across the finish line on every lap but one. The one time Baed er didn't control the race at the finish line came on lap five , when Ernde made a clean , smooth pass ent eri ng turn 16, on ly to lose th e lead to Baeder aga in on th e straight away and banking. Elsewhere on the track, it was an ybod y's race. Klinzmann a n d Emde did t hei r pass ing entering turn two off th e banking and sometimes ent ering th e tight right-hand turn s~ at the end of the esses. But Baeder would reg ain his lead in the fast , left- hand tu m nine leading onto the back straight, and could then sta y in front through turn 19 and across th e finish line. Baeder's gir lfriend waved the checkered flag for Baeder (Fri tz Baeder Construction Co . Yam ), Klinzmann (FMF, Mr . AI's , Fairway Yam aha) and Emde (Mack Cycle Center Yam ). Emde finished with no clutch - the ca b le had broken. . Reg Pridmore b roug ht out th e Racecrafters Internat iona l! Pierre desRoches KZI000 Kaw asaki and annihilated Open Superstreet. T urni ng a new Onta rio long -course production- bike unofficial lap record of 2:08.9 , Pridmore controlled th e ra ce from stan to fin ish , beating Pat Eagan (Mr . Jags I,OOOcc BSA) and Vance Breese (850 M-G). Pridmore The Suzuki RG500 made its clubrace debut with Cook Neilson aboard, ,'. d idn 't ent er Open Production because his AMA Superbike Production-legal bike doesn 't meet AFM rules . Eagan won Open Pr oduction , behind 750 Production win ner Paul Ritter (Eurom art / T orco Due). Al an _Gingerell i used his J ohn Lassak-prepared R5 Yamaha 550 to easily lea ve beh ind Scott Clough (RD550) and Dick Fuller (R5 550) in 410 Product ion . Gingerell i's bike's drum front brake doesn't seem to hu n his lap times. Former AMA Na tional sta r Jody Nicholas put club ra cing in its proper perspective by com ing from a long ways behind to win the 250 Production race overall on a Honda MTI25R. N icholas caug ht up to and outrode la nd sp ee d reco rd holder Gordon " Seim's 250 Can- Am , but the moral victo ry didn't count for the 125 GP win - Nicholas and several other riders jum ped out of the second wave at the combined start. Mark Homchick wai ted for the sec ond wave sta rt , caught and passed every 125 except Nicholas' , and so claimed th e 125 GP WID . Klinzmann won Open GP on his TZ750, with Pridmore second overall on the Superb ike Production Kawasaki . Keith Code (Mel Dinesen TZ350) was th ird .overall , first in 550500 GP, ahead of Rud y Galindo (Fairfield Yamaha TZ750D) and Cook Neilson (Suzuki RG500 ). Neilson's ride marked the club race debut of the square-four Suzuki, and the bike needs some sorting out. • Results in Results Sect ion .
