It's the Open Novice Main at Oakdale Rough Sc rambles, May 22. first lap but worked up to finish fourth . Cantaloupi got the top money and Ernst collected for second overall , third going to Yoho. John Minor (Suz) grabbed the lead in the first 250 run with Cantaloupi chasing him and the two of them gained a lot of ground over third man Comerta before Minor had to give up the lead to Cantaloupi . The heavy racing was for the third spot while lap after lap Mark Hilton (Suz) dogged Comella's heels trying to get by . When Hilton finally went around Comella he took off after Minor, but he had wasted too much time and got within striking range just as the checkered flag fell. Bert Noble (Yam) then took the spot from Archer. Comella was in fourth and Hi lton again was trying to get around him but a crash set hi m back and he sett led for fifth, Ca ntalou pi again got the big money. Noble cashed in second coming out on top of a five way tie for the place with Archer , Cometta , Hilto'!-and Minor taking overall in that order, all with .the same points. The open class win went to Dean Wiggins (Mai) who led every lap of both motos , The first moto began to look like a demolition derby as nearly every rider on the track either fell down or ran into someone who had. Wiggins didn't fall and had a gigantic lead over second runner Steve Elstins (Suz) . Mike Miller (Mai) got the third and Hilton (Hus) made it to fourth after a last place start. working up to third only to crash - find himself . ninth - and work up again . Wiggins was way out front again in the second moto Miller and Hilton were dicing .fo r the second and Tony . ' Bousca l (Mai) moved up to join in their fun . The going got real tight before Hilton crashed . Miller was safe now and had the second finish , third going to Bouseal and Hilton fourth again. Wiggins picked up the well deserved firs t place money, Miller the second and H ilton was paid for the third ove rall. This race was the third and final in a high point series for the Sportsman riders . May 15 Speed way season opened after a week's delay due to rain. Bill Zir kle, riding the Division II main , walked away with the event , winning the first Speedway event he had ever entered. Not too shabbyl · , Something new has been added in Northern California this year in the form of team racing. The two teams , Sacramento and Folsom , meet in a single event each race night. Mike Faria, of the Sacto team , managed to squeeze by Larry Shaw of Fo lsom, but he cou ldn't catch hard-charging Steve Bast , who is the captain of the Folsom team . The finish of the team event fou nd Fo lsom ahead of Sacto by a score of four to three. Du a ne Yarrow fo und himself in some pretty tough company in the Division I Handicap Main. Riding off the twenty yard line, Duane outdistanced tHe likes of Dennis Robinson , Mike Faria, and Rich MacMurray, who finished second , third , and fourth respectivly. The Division I Scratch Main turned out to be a two man dual between Rieh MacMurray ' a nd Dennis Robinson. When the tapes went up, Marty Benck found himself sandwiched between Steve Bast and Robinso n . Benck took a real bad spill. putting him out of the race . Bast. who evidently thought the race would be resta rted . slowed up only to find that there was to be no red flag . Ro binso n stayed hot on MacMurray's tail for the full four la ps. unable to pass NorCal's number one rider. Folsom, Ca, May 14 Speed way riders invaded this small Northern Ca liforn ia town Satu rday nigh t to put on a show tha t will keep the fans comi ng back. T he Folsom track was firsi run last yea r as an alternate to the Ca lExpo track which shut down for two weeks due to the State Fair. The races were such a success that a new promoter, Gene Kirby, has decided to take charge of the program on a weekly basis . The races take place in the rodeo arena. and the track itself is . a little different than most in that it is larger at one end than at the other. The track surface was well-groomed and it held together fo r the entire program. The team event of the evening resembled a north - south match as Steve Bast and Larry Shaw. riding for Folsom , were pitted against Mike Faria and Martv Benck of the Cal Expo squad. Be;'ck broke and Faria was held at bay. for a couple laps by the blocking taties fo Bast and Shaw. (They must have been practicing) Faria. rode close to the pole and finaly squeezed by Shaw and captured second place. keeping Cal-Expo within four points of Folsom . At the end of th e First Division Handicap Main . Mike Leopold found him self in the victory circle for the first tim e in his Division I career. I t seems tha t someone on his pitcrew added a few m o re teet h o n Mike's gearing , a nd Mike didn 't know a thing about it until the race was over! Mike was all smiles after beating Duane Yarrow, Rich MacMurray. Mike Faria and Steve Bast in the quick -paced event . Rollin' R ich MacMurray came very close to pushing his bike over the finish lin e to take the win in the First Division Scratch Main . Rich forgot to turn on fuel before the race. and he credits the two large float bowls on his Jawa for saving his hide . MacMurray jumped into first place after quite a bit of bumping in the first corner. and he kept the lead for the entire event with Mike Faria and Ron McGill hot on his trail. Rich has a firm hold on the point lead after this . his second consecutive WIn . SHR MX: Schlag takes one; Nava grabs two By Tura Houser BRENT W O OD , CA, MAY 13 Joey Schlag , ridi ng in the 125 Expert class for only a month , did it again - but this time he had to work for it. Schlag had to pass the Greener brothers to win the first moto. In the second rnoto, Schlag worked up from third spot and managed to take the lead about halfway through ~he race , after supe,: competition from Greg Greener who was second overall and Sam Houston who finished third. In the Mini competition. Sam Nava did something you don't often see .' After a staggered start with four intermediate riders going first , Nava led the Novice class and proceeded to pass three of them . Only Kevin Cadieux , winner of the intermediate class. could hold him back. Nava will . ride with the intermediate class from now on. Nava also won the Mini Money race. after Kevin Cadieux took a fall just before the finish line. Sco t Land won the Trophy Dash. held in the Open Junior class this week. Land won both motos in his regula r competition with the Open J u nior riders for his first ove rall . The O pen Expert and 250 Expert were combined and r t here was some real exciti ng racing. Phil Anderson on his TT 500 won the first moto, coming down the long straightaway, going sideways on the far outside. Wayne Morrell had to settle for second . The second moto was quite different; the
