"T h e Michigan Mafia is gonna roll over all the competition, Hey , we're going for it. " a poo r start to the lead. John J ohn son . In an orange and black blur. the Harley-Davidson wrecking crew pu lled a one-two -three sweep as Jay led the wa y followed by teammates T ed Bood y and Corky Keener. The t rio wer e followed clo sely by the Yamahas of last yea r's winner. Hank Scott . and Ken ny Rob erts. . The one -two pla cing of Springer . a nd Boody. co m bi ned with Roberts' fifth st ill left Kenn y (6 1) with the po ints lead and Springer and Bood y inchi ng up with 49 points apiece . The Oklahoma State Fairgrounds ' track . as it had been last yea r, was the vict im 'o f rain and . like last year , turned int o a rutted motocross-like surface before practi ce ~as half over. By the time th e National rolled around . the track was classified by most riders as ha ving no safe place to ride although only a few get -offs were recorded during th e ent ire day. Hank Scott. proved he and his Shell R a cing Yama ha st ill knew the way around O K Cit y as he dipped his qua lifying run int o the 24 -second bra cket at 24 .87 1: th e on ly rider to d o so . Boody. Springst een and Keen er foll owed with Ph il McD onal d 's Bel Ra y H arley rounding the top five. Harle y privateer .. . Od el Davi s took 48th qual ifier. ' Hank Scott took th e win in heat on e , but it too k him five laps to com e fro m on the H -D of Washington /Sizemore Traveland Harley . held the lead for the opening five laps while Scott worked past the self sponsored Harley of Da ve Aldana . Ed Daley's Red Dal ey Harley. the Warren H -D of Scott Drake before ch all enging and passing J ohnson for the lead com ing out of turn three . The attention then turned to the Drake-Aldana battle for third which Drake won with a last la p pass of Aldana out of turn four. The only two Florida riders in the program - Alan . Loughhead (Pates H -D ) and Jay Levingsto n (ji m's .Yam a ha ) bumped themselves into the haybales in turn one on the opening lap of heat two . bringing out the red flag . Both were uninjured , bu t only Levingston restarted. O n the second try Ted Bood y claimed the lead with Steve Morehead . on the KK Insurance & KK Supply Harley . immediately cha llenging. Boody. working with an unscuffed ti re and Morehead. with his geari ng a litt le off. ran hea d to hbd unti l their prob lems bega n to wor k for and against them . respectively . Mike Co llins held th ird righ t do wn to th e la st turn of th e last lap when the Zanotti Enterprises Harley of Steve Eklund . zapped him for third and th transfer to th e National.
