If you' re co m ing to New Orleans by b ike , stop in and see Da ve Dols en at Take a ride on the Superdome track Here's a test ride on the track that will be built in the Louisiana Superdome for the J u n e 4th Superdome Supercross: The Superdome track comes alive on June 4, Out of th e ga te , the rid ers approach a pair of high -spe ed two - foot jumps, then ska te int o th e first turn , whi ch will be banked to a height of six feet. N ext a 90· left hand er , a short straightaway and over the first crosscut jum p , (five feet high on the insid e lin e and two feet high on th e ou tside ) flying int o the next turn. Exit the turn , down a straight section and over a six foot d rop -off jump. As soon as th e rid er s land . t hey' ll face three l Ovfoot peaks th a t have to be ta ken slowly. Ove r th e t hird peak , a nd int o a sa ndy swee ping turn a nd ou t onto a 260-foot sa nd stra ightaway. O ut of t he sand , 'off an angular b ank , across the starting grid , and int o the first whoop-de-d oes. Over the second cross -cut jump, a quick left right switchback , a nd up onto t he eigh t -foo t plateau. As soon as they get on top of the plateau , they'll be off of the other side , but hav e to ma ke a 180· back up th e grade to th e top of the plat ea u aga in. Down eight-feet aga in, and int o a banked 180· . and up th e "s te ps" (T wo four -foot e le va t ion s. b ringin g the rid er s up to eight -feet aga in) a nd th en down a steep eig ht· foo t slope. T he cou rse opens u p a littl e here . into a left ha nder a nd over a series of ro lle r coaster wh oo ps called th e "Zephyr ," each about IOvfeet high . Coming out of the "Zephyr," another 180· left , a 90· rig ht and over a 12-foot .rollover. Then a right hand "speedway" sweeper, and a left hand two- berm turn (the inside line filled with sand) . Over a small jump , and a hairpin that starts the riders on a slow climb to ·the top of a 15-foot hill. T hey'll accelerat e down the hi ll and then fly up a l O-foot high jump whi ch will la unch th e hotshots 100 feet . As soo n as th ey land , it's on the brakes , over a three-foot rollover front wheel first into th e sa nd pit. Ou t of the sa nd, onto th e sta rti ng grid and across the finis h line. Wh ew! • 43
