Min nig was second and Neihart got third but was side li ne d the rest of th e n igh t with what turned out to be a slight concussion. The half m ile look ed to see Sel vy repeat but he d idn't count on Mik e Paulson. Paulson had been gi ving Selvy a rough tim e from the start and on the fifth lap he got his cha nce , made the move and came out on top . Eddie Drake , riding with the Amateur/ Ex perts for t he firs t time was third. Pete "Speedy" Hames, sideli ned ~th a sour bike last week, came back and ra n away with both the short tra ck and half mile 125 Amateur /Expert goes . David Hulbert held off Eddie Drake for th e second on the short track a n d Darren did th e sa m e thing to Mike Redding on the half m ile. • 211 Results in Results Section. ;ri 604 racers invade las Vegas for NMA National ~y Hilary Hicks LAS VEGAS , NV, MAY 14-15 Lenny Geiger, 16, of Las Vegas was a notable success at the National Minieyde Assn. (NMA) Bel-Ray Las Vegas Nationals , held at Williams Raceway. . I . In the Sunda y mo to , Geigr was up against Jerry Bagby of Yuma , AZ, who had done poorly th e firs t rou nd ; and Gary Dircks of Ph oenix, who had won the first rno to ea sily to Geiger 's third place. Dirc ks go t off to a bad start and Bagby took the lead. Geiger held back , clinging to second spot until Bagby slid out on the last lap. Dircks was well behind . Geiger won in a triu m p ha nt burst past Bagby, who stood by helplessly. It was th e day's best run . Bagby had his own moment of glory when he won th e brand new N MA 250cc stack 14-18 class . Dircks' win ca me in 0-83cc Stack Experts 12-16. Paul Em erson of Las Vega s rod e a crest of wins in 12·16 , 0 -83cc Modified Expert and 100 Modified Experts . Emerson is expected to be a str ong cont ender at th e N a tional Fin als, August 19-21 in Houston. Scott Burnworth of San Dieg o is another prospect to go th e distance to Houston . At Las Vegas, th e first of 34 Nationals in eight regions, he won 12· 16 Expert 105cc Minicycle and 100 motorcycle cla sses. A little gu y had a g rea t da y. Brandon Schneider , 8 , of Chino , CA , took first in 6-8 Junior Cycle Mod ified and 0-83cc 6-8 Stock Min icycle , a nd a second in Junior Cycle Stock . Joey Dee of La s Vegas liked the course , ("If you can rid e wh at we call dirt in Las Vegas you can rid e anything") and had one of his best days in a whil e . He took second in 100 Expert Stack .behind Bagby, and go t third in 100 Modified . Williams Racewa y is a brand new place leased and operated on a trial basis by Bobby and Shirley ("Sh orty") Williams, with th e cooperation of th e Clark County Planning Commission. "We're running this new place for as long as the people racing and the community here like it ," says Shorty. " It probably isn 't bothering anybody wa y out here , and there isn 't a rock on the course or nearby for that matter ." "Its tight , narrow and soft ," sa id A.J. Whiting 13, Sherman Oaks , CA of the track , on wh ich he didn't win anything. " It's an okay course , but you could water it more often." The track was completely re -done earlier in th e week by Les Emerson , father of Paul. None of the loca ls were able to ride it before th e race. The 37 m ot o weekend had 604 entries from nine sta tes, and were a ll run off by 2:30 Sunda y a fte rn oon .
